First and foremost, before doing ANYTHING else, feel your feelings! This is a huge transition that just happened, and likely affected the trajectory of your life. It's okay to feel down for however many days you need to. With mindfulness, you also must keep in mind not to stay in that place for too long! Mindfulness can help us with shifting our mindset to embrace this change. When we embrace change, instead of resisting it, we can see it as an opportunity for growth and learning, and it helps us expand on our journey. We may end up doing something we didn't know we liked or were good at!

I understand that going through a layoff is tough, but it really can be a chance to reshape your career in a way that truly fits you. First off, give yourself some time to deal with those mixed emotions—it’s perfectly normal to feel them. Once you feel a bit more settled, reflect on what parts of your last job you really loved and what you didn’t. Take a good look at your skills, too, and consider how they align with the path you want to take now. Maybe there's room for learning something new or strengthening some areas? And don't forget about your network. Reach out to people thoughtfully, not just to exchange contact info but to connect with them and learn from them. Take it one step at a time, setting clear, achievable goals.

This is more than just about change, this is grief. Accepting to go through the stages of grief, and learning to let go of what once seemed safe and defining. It's by first acknowledging the loss that we can make room for seeing the other half of the glass full. The mistake one can make is to try to dismiss the emotions that might rise. Acknowledging them and processing them before letting them go is a great way to start the self-reflection that leads to the mindset shift.

Change is inevitable and a Universal Constant. Job Lay-offs are a shock, create anxiety, and put us in a brief period of grief. Accepting this "change" moves you quickly into the process of Healing. Mindfulness accelerates your physical and emotional recovery. Continuing your Mindfulness Practices will foster your inspiration, creative innovation, and ultimately your clarity and focus in pursuing "Your Dream Career".

When it comes to reevaluating your career post-layoff, it's crucial to approach the process with a blend of patience, self-compassion, and strategic thinking. Start by taking a step back and assessing your skills, passions, and values. What truly matters to you in a career? What are you naturally good at? Reflecting on these questions can help you gain clarity on what direction you want to take next. Consider exploring new avenues and industries that align with your interests and strengths. This could be the perfect moment to pivot towards something that truly excites you. Remember, setbacks like layoffs can often lead to unexpected opportunities, so keep an open mind and trust in your ability to navigate this transition!
-
Start by taking quiet moments to reflect on your experiences and strengths. Journaling is a powerful tool—write about past achievements and challenges to identify key skills. This practice helps you recognize your value without the cloud of stress, providing a clear foundation for your next steps.
-
KNOW that you are not defined by your job/career. AFFIRMATIVE CONSCIOUS REALIZATION: "You are a multi-talented person with tremendous potential and insights into the world around you. You are a good person who rises to the occasion to help others. Any employer would gratefully hire me". And so it is! Go out and do what you do best. Be You.
-
Sometimes asking for a friend's help can feed additional information for this assessment. Your closest peers are able to see parts of yourself that might be hidden from your own consciousness. Ask for their opinion of what they believe you are exceptionally good at. You might find reinforcement on what is your superpower.

Setting clear, achievable goals is crucial after a layoff. Use mindfulness to maintain focus and set intentions aligned with your career aspirations. Breaking down long-term objectives into smaller, manageable steps helps prevent feeling overwhelmed. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and journaling, can enhance clarity and resilience, aiding in the creation of a structured, actionable plan. This approach ensures steady progress and keeps you motivated, ultimately guiding you toward your desired career path

We had a debate with my coach about the SMART methodology when it comes to goal setting. It was discussed that it can get tricky as this methodology can be a double-edge sword when you're falling short on goals. To avoid having to beat yourself up, it is important to use the goal setting tools you are given in a mindful way. Make sure to evaluate and do enough research to assess how realistic the goals are. Break them as much as possible and remember to be kind to yourself.

When you have all this free time now, it can be helpful to explore your options mindfully and intentionally. The world is now your oyster! Do you want to continue in the same field, or try something completely different? Depending on what you choose, you may have to embark on continuing education. When using mindfulness during this time, it helps to prevent any distractions from getting you off track, and it can help with blocking out any outside opinions that may influence your decision. Remember, this is for YOU! Take other people's opinions with a grain of salt. With mindfulness, we get back in touch with our bodies, and can feel in our gut when a decision is totally right for us!
-
Exploring options mindfully means opening yourself to new possibilities without rushing. Take time to meditate and visualize different career paths. Mindful research involves focusing fully on each potential opportunity, considering how it aligns with your values and long-term goals. This deliberate approach ensures you make choices that truly resonate with your aspirations.
-
Looking back over your career to date, what were the things you found yourself doing, even if they are not part of your main job description? What kinds of things did you volunteer to do or do in addition to your day job? When I did this analysis I realized I was always finding a way to teach somebody something regardless of the job. This reflection will highlight your natural strengths-things you are good at and enjoy, that you do all the time without perhaps realizing it, that might suggest some different career paths for you.
-
It's hard, but remember that most of the time, a layoff is not personal. You were not chosen because of your skills, personality, etc. You were chosen due to some strategic corporate shift. Perhaps your area of focus is being devalued or downgraded in that company, but you are still a talented person with copious value to offer the world.
-
Resilience is essential for navigating career transitions. Mindfulness fosters resilience by helping you stay grounded during rejections or setbacks. Through mindfulness, you can practice self-compassion and maintain a positive outlook. Each experience, whether positive or negative, becomes a chance to learn and grow, reinforcing your ability to adapt and thrive in new career paths. By cultivating a resilient mindset, you enhance your capacity to handle challenges and turn them into opportunities for personal and professional development.
-
The phrase, "It's not what you know, but who you know" is true. Mindful networking exposes you to people who you might not normally meet through your travels as a Mindfulness Coach. Your talents and experience clearly speaks to your abilities. However, it is the impression you leave upon people that positively imprints you in the forefront of their minds.
-
Create old-school connections in the modern world. In the online world, people are afraid to meet face-to-face... Put yourself inside the rooms where the people you need to meet are. And remember they are just HUMAN... Don't try to sell them yourself and hand over your CV, instead talk to them, get to know them, and approach them.
-
Don't fret if you do not know what to do right away after a layoff. Not knowing means that every path is available to you right now. Try to think of it as a gift that many people don't have, the ability to choose what is best for you and where you can offer the most.
-
A layoff is an opportunity for intentional career exploration. Practice gratitude. Acknowledge the skills and experience you gained in your previous role. This sets a positive foundation for your search. Reflect, not react. Take time to reconnect with your values and passions. What truly lights you up? What impact do you want to make? Explore, don't just search. Volunteer, attend industry events, or even shadow someone in a field that piques your interest. This mindful exploration can open doors you never knew existed. Embrace the unknown. Stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to unexpected discoveries and a career that aligns with your deepest aspirations. Remember, a layoff isn't the end of your story.
