About 8 years ago, I shifted my mindset to how I showed up for life, and this instantly shifted my energy. I went from being employed to being deployed. I then supported this mindset shift with the following ways of being. 1. BE CONVINCED - about who you are! When you move from a belief to a level of conviction, you become a more immovable and unshakable force. Less can take you down. 2. BE RELENTLESS - focus on running your own race. Much of our stressors come from comparing ourselves to others. 3. BE PATIENT — NO = Next Opportunity. Nuff said! 🤩 4. BE POSITIONED — Your network is your network. A broad network alleviates stressors.

Here are 3 Key areas to consider: 1. Stay Ahead of Risks: Take proactive steps to anticipate and address potential issues before they escalate. Identify vulnerabilities, and implement preventive measures for early signs of trouble. By staying proactive, you can minimize the likelihood of encountering major setbacks that could lead to burnout. 2. Build Strong Relationships: Cultivate positive connections with key stakeholders. These individuals form your "first circle" of influencers who can either support or hinder your work. 3. Foster a Sustainable Culture: Beyond processes and policies, prioritize the development of a sustainable operational culture. Self-leadership that balances operational performance with your well-being is crucial.

While several factors contribute to burnout, here are my top 4 that add stress: Lack of Regular Reflection and Feedback: Without regular reflection and feedback, it's difficult to understand what works and what doesn't. This hinders your ability to adjust strategies and improve performance. Reflection is crucial for growth. Failure to Identify Root Causes: Burnout often stems from dealing with the same issues repeatedly. Identifying root causes—such as funding, policies, procedures, or processes—essential for effective solutions. Resistance to Change: Sticking to "we have always done it that way" is detrimental. Advocating for change using insights and data, along with effective communication and leadership, is crucial for improvements.

Is it important to understand where this dress is coming from and how you can adapt to trim down on the stress that's coming in. Is there a possibility that you're doing work for another department? Is this a repeatable issue that multiple users are facing? Prioritizing what jobs are important is the great first step

The short and easy answer to this question is: 1) Learning how to say 'no' in 35 different ways, and without offending anyone. 2) Coming to terms with the concept that when everything is urgent, nothing actually is. 3) Realizing that the only people who in 25 years from now will remember your long working hours are your family. Because you were never there.
No entanto, é importante desconectar e recarregar.
-
In my experience, setting clear boundaries is crucial in IT Operations to prevent burnout. It's important to define your work hours and stick to them, while also establishing an on-call rotation with colleagues for emergencies. This approach ensures everyone gets time to recharge and helps maintain these boundaries. Clear communication with colleagues and superiors is key to having these boundaries respected, which ultimately reduces stress and prevents burnout.
-
Great way to set boundaries by advocating for workplace changes, one should consider right ways not to jeopardize job security. Some of working strategies to consider: 1 . Approach it Collaboratively, Frame the discussion as a collaborative effort to improve the workplace for the benefit of both employees and the organization. Emphasize how the proposed changes can positively impact productivity, retention, and overall organizational health. 2 . Suggest Pilot Programs, Propose starting with a pilot program to test the feasibility of the changes you're advocating for. 3 . Maintain a Constructive Attitude, Approach the discussion with a solutions-oriented mindset, focusing on how the changes can benefit both you and the organization.

In my experience, understanding stress is the first step towards resilience. Recognizing the signs of stress in your body and mind, such as irritability, fatigue, or trouble concentrating, is essential. Stress in IT operations often comes from tight deadlines and high expectations. Acknowledging that these pressures are part of the job helps, but they don't have to overwhelm us. Identifying stressors allows us to take proactive steps to manage them before they escalate.

The most imperitive things here is to remember the definition of "earned time". This is time that you have earned for yourself and cannot be impeded upon by your employer. In IT, it is easy to be considered the only person who can do something, to have no proper backup when you take times off. However, when you put in for earned time, keep a copy of the approval and remember it is abusive and illegal to be overworked. Many companies will never tell you that. Many employers will push to get you to do things that are unreasonable. Unless you set your boundaries and stand by them they will take any advantage they can get. Remember a 3% yearly raise is not worth the time you lose when you work on your vacations.
-
Establishing clear boundaries is essential in preventing burnout, especially in the demanding field of IT Operations. By setting specific work hours, communicating these boundaries to colleagues and superiors, and prioritizing time for rest and recharge, you can protect your well-being and reduce stress levels. Respecting these boundaries is key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance and preventing burnout in a 24/7 operational environment.

I totally agree that To-Do list is the best and simplest ways to prioritize, organize, track your tasks and allocate the appropriate time accordingly, most of us may think not to spend anytime building the To-Do list, I used to think this way earlier. However, after building the list you will realize what are you doing, what is important and what is most important. If you are lazy to make the To-Do list, just write down the tasks on your notebook.
-
This should be a no-brainer for anyone in IT services. We knows priorities than anyone else. And now, we just need to apply the same for every task worth doing. While working on a top priority task right away is correct approach, so it 'finishing' that low priority task. You never know when some low priority tasks become top priority.
-

By managing your workload strategically, you can enhance productivity, reduce overwhelm, and ensure that essential tasks are addressed promptly and efficiently.

This motivates me to explore avenues for improvement, seeking inspiration from analogous or disparate projects, domains, and technologies to leverage existing solutions effectively. Consequently, this iterative process not only enriches my understanding but also facilitates the resolution of systemic issues, benefiting the collective endeavor.

Think of it the job of it regular IT of professional – they need to collaborate with L1, L2 teams, and development teams to arrive at root cause of a problem and provide a reliable and resilient solution or mitigate the problem quickly. The process involves working with multiple teams, and having a fair network within the organization leads to better interactions and resolutions.

One of the greatest bulwarks against burnout is a a strong network. I once read in a great book that folks should not forsake assembling with like-minded individuals. There is great strength in communities. Listen well to people's conversations during and between sessions at conferences and you will quickly learn that you are not alone. Many people are struggling through very similar, if not the exact same troubles, and this can be reassuring.

I actively cultivate connections with our third-party vendors and Microsoft account managers. They often prove to be an unexpected yet invaluable asset, offering insights or guiding me towards resources I might not have considered.
-
Cultivate a support network with fellow IT professionals to bolster resilience. Engage with peers through professional associations, online communities, or networking events to share insights, advice, and coping mechanisms. Building these connections offers emotional support and practical assistance, enabling you to navigate challenges in the IT field with a sense of camaraderie and shared knowledge.

The number of time i have come across solutions to impossible problems in forums online are countless. I think we as IT professionals take a little bit of pride in helping others which mildly stroke our egos. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Not just forums, reach out and talk to a colleague. You and another person might be given the same tool but could have different solutions as you have different perspectives or approaches in life

Mind over body.. physcological well-being is key to healthy body and your productivity too at work. Small breaks of 5-10 mins can help revitalize your mind and lower impact of stress. One should incorporate easy to do practices like walk away from desk to peers, calling family/friend or concious meditation to stop build-up of immediate stress..
-

Self-care might sound like a trendy buzzword, but it’s maintenance that's a must. Meditation, personal reflection, or just plain zoning out with your favorite show? Totally legit. Whether you’re a CEO or a newbie SWE, take that vacation time. The company will still be standing when you get back from your beach retreat or Netflix binge. Whatever helps you unwind, do it. And do it often. Your body and mind will thank you, and the relaxed, recharged you will shine in your work. Self-care isn’t just important; it’s your ticket to sustained success.
-
For me it's Different Mindset & Selfcare are two pillars to overcome from Mindset => Positive attitude: When attempting a fix of a problem and eventually getting hold of the solution, the feeling is quite satisfying. Growth mindset: It is thus important to view challenges as growth opportunities of gaining fresh experiences that help build your capabilities. Self-care = > Maintain boundaries: Define clear and acceptable working-hours and avoid spending extensive time on work-related tasks when not in the office. Health: Get adequate rest, eat well, and engage in routines physical activity. Relaxation: Performing some meditations, deep breathing exercises, and or even doing some yoga to reduce stress and enhance concentration.

I always think its useful to question whether what you are experiencing is stress or stretch. Both are real but stretch is easier to manage as it's simply a case of looking at what you can put on hold, delegate or reject to offer some release of the pressure.

Everyone is susceptible to the tunnel vision of burnout, this includes management. You may be the only one concerned about your career and growth. A stagnating career is one that is not changing or growing. Stagnation creates all the ingredients for burnout. Have a talk with yourself about your career, your daily tasks, what you love, like, hate. What skill have you picked up that create a bridge to another role in your origination or somewhere else. Be realistic, burnout cannot be cured in your current role and most likely not on your current team. Be prepared to move on.
