About this movie

Walt Disney Animation Studios' ENCANTO tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal-every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family's last hope. The film features all-new songs by Emmy®, GRAMMY® and Tony Award® winner Lin-Manuel Miranda ("Hamilton," MOANA) and is directed by Byron Howard (ZOOTOPIA, TANGLED) and Jared Bush (co-director ZOOTOPIA), co-directed by Charise Castro Smith (writer "The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez") and produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino.

I like the animation. I love the character designs. It's very standard Disney fare. They spend an awkward amount of time on plot points that make no sense even if a dumb kid thinks about it, and the music didn't stick with me at all. The plot twist(?) is that this movie is essentially just retelling Coco. Low 3 but still a 3 ig.

As someone with heritage from Colombia, my family and I are offended. Coco had a whole Mexican heritage movie and I loved it. This movie was a joke to us. If Disney actually took the time to learn about Colombia, this story wouldn't have been based on magic. The power of our culture should have replaced the magic in this movie. Nobody spoke any Spanish. There were no Spanish songs. The closest they got was arepas and the background scenery, the rest was a joke.

Here's the message I got from watching Encanto: "Embrace and submit or loose your gifts". Combine that message with Raya and the Last Dragon on "trust your enemies", I am heavily questioning the intention of these newer Disney (not Pixar) animations. Some of the songs were catchy and the visualization for them were intriguing. The plot was bare and left you cold shivering to find another movie that'll provide you with warmth and substance. Parents! Please watch this film prior to exposing to your kids. What do you want Disney to implant into their minds? Are you content with that message above? I'm not. Find out for yourself by watching it beforehand and then make the executive decision whether or not to let your kid watch it
