Connell and Marianne grew up in the same small town, but the similarities end there. At school, Connell is popular and well liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation—awkward but electrifying—something life changing begins.

A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years at university, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. And as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.

Normal People is the story of mutual fascination, friendship, and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find that they can’t.

This book is not for you if you don't like when the plot is based on the two main characters having horrible communication skills. I liked it in the beginning but slowly became so impatient at the constant back and forth of their dynamic. The writing is good don't get me wrong. I'm too old for these types of books now. :/

4.25 stars This book follows our main characters over time from the end of high school through college; as they navigate social circles and becoming adults. Going through relationships, mental highs & lows, and sometimes their relationship is unhealthy. While other times is brings out the best and they try harder for each other and themselves. It was sad how it ends for sure but I'm glad they were both in a much better mental place by then.

Reading this book and watching the show during a pandemic filled me with so many feelings, it's hard to describe. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is because at times Rooney's dialogue can be tricky to read, as she doesn't use quotation marks, which was a first for me.
