“Unlike anything I've ever read.” —V.E. Schwab on Gideon the Ninth

“Deft, tense and atmospheric, compellingly immersive and wildly original.” —The New York Times on Gideon the Ninth

Her city is under siege.

The zombies are coming back.

And all Nona wants is a birthday party.

In many ways, Nona is like other people. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. But Nona's not like other people. Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back.

The whole city is falling to pieces. A monstrous blue sphere hangs on the horizon, ready to tear the planet apart. Blood of Eden forces have surrounded the last Cohort facility and wait for the Emperor Undying to come calling. Their leaders want Nona to be the weapon that will save them from the Nine Houses. Nona would prefer to live an ordinary life with the people she loves, with Pyrrha and Camilla and Palamedes, but she also knows that nothing lasts forever.

And each night, Nona dreams of a woman with a skull-painted face...

This was a gruelling book to read through, I loved Gideon, enjoyed Harrow, but only cos the third act brought it together... but Nona... Nona was a labour to get through... the fact that complex events are filtered through a child like perception was not a fun read for me. It started hitting its stride at the half way mark, but Tamsyn keeps the reader off balance and I never got the clarity of the mystery that was being hinted at through Nona's persepective. I will read Alecto the Ninth, but I can't read this one again.

worst of the series, great world building in the first two books. But in this one they even chop it down to just initials of who is speaking in some parts. Reads like it was written by an 8th grader telling a drama story on reddit. Doesnt have the heart string pulls that the first book had.

I really love the world these books are set in, unfortunately I found this chapter less enjoyable reading. Overall the book could really have benefited from some more world building, just when you think something is about to be explained, nope, here have three new bits ot partial lore. I didn't find Nona particularly engaging and seeing the story through the eyes of someone who doesn't know who they are or what's going on left me feeling the same way.
