About this ebook

"A fresh, funny take on the search for a soulmate." —People

A savvy, page-turning novel about a woman torn between her husband and the man she thought she'd marry by the author of the New York Times Bestseller and Reese's Book Club Pick,  The Last Thing He Told Me

Annie Adams is days away from her thirty-second birthday and thinks she has finally found some happiness. She visits the world's most interesting places for her syndicated travel column and she's happily cohabiting with her movie director boyfriend Nick in Los Angeles. But when Nick comes home from a meeting with his therapist (aka "futures counselor") and announces that he's taking a break from their relationship so he can pursue a woman from his past, the place Annie had come to call home is shattered. Reeling, Annie stumbles into her neighborhood bar and finds Griffin-a grounded, charming chef who seems to be everything Annie didn't know she was looking for. Within three months, Griffin is Annie's husband and Annie finds herself trying to restart her life in rural Massachusetts.

A wry observer of modern love, Laura Dave "steers clear of easy answers to explore the romantic choices we make" (USA Today). Her third novel is packed with humor, empathy, and psychological insight about the power of love and home.

“It feels important to start with the truth about how I got here. When everything gets messy and brutal and complicated, the truth is the first thing to go, isn’t it?” (1) These first couple lines of the opening scene immediately grabbed my attention. The more I read, the more I found out about the narrator and what happened to her. THE FIRST HUSBAND (April 2012) is about a successful travel writer named Annie Adams who has seen the world and written countless articles about her adventures. Early in the novel, her boyfriend, Nick, an aspiring film director with a hunger for success, is advised by his therapist to break up with her. Having been together for five years, Annie is completely heartbroken. Her best friend, Jordan, comes to visit and manages to pull Annie out of her slump. Upon Jordan's urging, Annie goes out one evening and meets Griffin, a chef who is visiting from out-of-state. The two fall in love and, shortly thereafter, get married. Griffin takes his wife home to Williamsburg, Massachusetts. This small town is filled with colorful characters, including Griffin’s mother, brother, and ex-girlfriend. I really enjoyed meeting his family, especially Griffin’s brother, Jesse. Although Annie and Jesse don’t meet under the best of circumstances, they eventually bond well together, like brother and sister. Some of my favorite scenes were with them. Throughout the book, I was cheering for Annie. She stumbled along and didn't always see what was right in front of her. But such is life. Sometimes the things we most desire are right in front of us and we don’t notice it at first. I certainly can relate to this. This entertaining novel has swept the board, receiving high praise from newspapers to popular magazines. One thing these reviews have in common is this: THE FIRST HUSBAND is a great summer read. I agree and highly recommend it! This book was quick to read and hard to put down. I’m certain the ending will leave a smile on your face, as it did on mine.
