7-Year-Old Boy Who Died in Crash at Florida ATV Park Was Not Wearing Helmet: Officials

A 7-year-old boy who died in a crash this week at a Florida ATV park was not wearing a helmet at the time, according to officials.

The Florida Highway Patrol said in an information release obtained by PEOPLE that the boy was sitting behind a 32-year-old man operating an ATV when the vehicle flipped on Sunday, April 21, at the Hog Waller Campground and ATV Resort in Palatka.

"While making a sharp turn the ATV overturned," the FHP said in the release. "The ATV overturned onto the child as the child struck a tree stump."

The 32-year-old man suffered minor injuries, the agency said. The boy died at Putnam General Hospital.

The death now marks four fatalities at the park since 2019, according to First Coast News.

When contacted by PEOPLE on Tuesday, April 23, the park said they had no comment.

The victims, who have not been identified at this time, were not wearing a helmet, according to the FHP.

But under Florida law, helmets are required for all drivers and passengers under the age of 16, CBS affiliate WJAX-TV. FHP told the outlet that charges would be determined at the end of the investigation.

According to WJAX-TV, the park reportedly has two entrance waivers that need to be signed by adults and minors. The waiver acknowledges risks, including that signers give up rights to claims and a lawsuit for any personal injury, including death.
