John Wick has become one of the most popular action franchises of all time.

The series, starring Canadian actor Keanu Reeves as the titular character, began with Wick, a legendary hitman, ending his retirement to exact revenge on the men who broke into his home, beat him and killed his dog — a gift from his deceased wife. However, once he returned to the underworld ways of his past, Wick struggles to gain freedom from the life of killing he once left behind.

The franchise’s first movie, John Wick, was released in 2014, followed by John Wick: Chapter 2 in 2017, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in 2019 and most recently, John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2023.

The franchise also debuted its first spinoff TV series, The Continental: From the World of John Wick, in September 2023, which is named after and based on the franchise’s hotel chain that functions as neutral ground for the underworld. In 2024, the John Wick universe will continue to expand with a new spinoff movie starring Ana de Armas, The Ballerina.

The original John Wick film started it all in 2014 with Reeves returning to his action roots to establish the franchise's tone with its unrelenting, story-driven action, fighting and stunts. The film grossed $86 million against an estimated budget of $20 million, becoming a profitable sleeper hit while achieving critical success with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 86%.

2017's John Wick: Chapter 2 saw Wick pulled back into the underworld after being called on to kill a member of the High Table — an International Assassin’s Guild in charge of the underworld — as a favor he’d previously committed to before his retirement. The film was another hit, grossing over $174 million worldwide.

The franchise returned with John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in 2019, which picked up immediately where the second film ended as Wick was declared “excommunicado” — stripped of all underworld privileges. The film, which also starred Halle Berry as Sofia Al-Azwar — the manager of The Continental in Casablanca — grossed $328 million.

You can watch the first three John Wick films on Peacock, with monthly subscriptions starting at $4.99. The movies are also available to rent or buy on Prime Video, Google Play or Apple TV.

After its premiere in 2023, John Wick: Chapter 4 was hailed as a cinematic triumph for both the action genre and the franchise, with some critics calling it “one of the greatest action movies ever made.” It received the franchise’s highest Rotten Tomatoes score at 94% and grossed $440 million.

As the bounty on Wick continued to increase, the film saw him try to earn his freedom by challenging the Marquis, Vincent Bisset de Gramont, a powerful member of the High Table played by Bill Skarsgård, to a duel. In the globe-trotting adventure, Wick fought to survive the bounty until his duel while traveling through Japan, Berlin and France.

“I love the challenges of John Wick, it’s super intense,” Reeves told PEOPLE in March 2023. “It’s playful. I get to do different things — driving, you know? [I get to use] nunchucks and do movie Judo, movie jujitsu. So I really enjoy that.”

The film also served as a tribute to Lance Reddick, who died seven days before the film’s release and starred as Charon, a receptionist at The Continental in New York throughout the franchise. Reeves and John Wick director Chad Stahelski dedicated the film to Reddick in a joint statement obtained by PEOPLE, calling him “a consummate professional and a joy to work with.”

While the first three films in the franchise are available on Peacock, John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently streaming on Starz, with monthly subscriptions starting at $2.99. Additionally, you can rent or buy the movie on Prime Video, Google Play or Apple TV.

In 2023, Peacock released the three-part prequel The Continental: From the World of John Wick, based on the franchise’s signature hotel of the same name. The miniseries tells the story of Winston Scott, a popular character in the franchise, who rose to power by taking the hotel from Cormac O’Connor, played by Mel Gibson.

All three episodes of The Continental: From the World of John Wick are streaming on Peacock.

John Wick fans have more to look forward to as the franchise — well-known for its mythology, rules and a wide cast of intriguing characters — will expand in numerous upcoming projects, including a reported fifth film.

In November 2023, Sahelski told The Playlist that there is an anime series in the works as well as a TV series and more spinoffs to explore Wick, different characters, the High Table and more. “I think TV is a better format for that, I think because people can jump into the backgrounds, you don’t have to spend so much time with the first act set up and all that,” Stahelski said.

A spinoff movie titled The Ballerina — based on a ballerina assassin introduced in John Wick Chapter 3 — Parabellum — is set to be released on June 7, 2024, with the film taking place between the third and fourth John Wick installments. De Armas is set to star as the lead, Rooney, while Reeves, Anjelica Huston and Ian McShane reprise their franchise roles.
