The four-time Super Bowl M.V.P., NFL Hall of Famer and sportscaster was the man behind “the Deer Mask” on Wednesday’s episode of The Masked Singer, FOX’s hit singing competition featuring 12 celebrity contestants singing and dancing in head-to-toe costumes that completely obscure their identities. It wasn’t much a surprise for those who were watching (or for celebrity panelist Jenny McCarthy, for that matter). Many had long pegged the 6-foot-3-inch Pittsburgh Steelers alum as “the Deer” due to his football-related clues, like how he was “fairly good at throwing,” had been “knocked down many times,” was “incredibly competitive” and loved horses. Fox In week one of the show, Bradshaw was at risk for elimination after his performance of “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons. It was his cover of “Get Your Shine On” by Florida Georgia Line on Wednesday that finally did him in. Bradshaw wasn’t too sad to go. “This is so stressful, I gotta thank y’all for voting me off,” he said with a laugh. “It’s been so much fun, so much fun,” he added. He’s released six albums of country/western and gospel music, starting with 1976’s I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry (its title track even landed in the top 20 on Billboard‘s country chart). Bradshaw’s last album was a duet record with Jake Hess, aptly titled Terry & Jake. On The Masked Singer, Bradshaw gave multiple nods to his singing past — telling the panel during week one that he considers himself a singer but is “not sure everyone’s going to agree with that.” “It’s hard for people to get past who I am and what I’m known for,” he said. Other celebrities speculated in the running include Denise Richards, Ricki Lake, Donny Osmond, Tori Spelling, Rumer Willis and LaToya Jackson. Since its premiere earlier this month, The Masked Singer has been a success, drawing in 9.2 million viewers in its first week alone, according to The Wrap. Its format is based on the South Korean format created by Mun Hwa Broadcasting Corp. Joining McCarthy on the judging panel are Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger and Ken Jeong. Former America’s Got Talent star Nick Cannon hosts. The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays (8 p.m. ET) on Fox.
