On Nov. 12 the couple took time out to volunteer at their local Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) in Los Angeles, where they cooked breakfast for the families staying there while their children receive critical medical care in the area. Legend, 44, tells PEOPLE he and Teigen, 37, were excited to make it a family affair. “We spent a wonderful Sunday afternoon with families,” says Legend of teaming up with the organization, which provides support and housing for the families of sick children. “These families come from all over, and their kids are being treated at Children’s Hospital and it’s really difficult for families to deal with that. We were happy to come and cook for them and spend some time.” John Legend on His 'Beautiful' 10-Year Wedding Anniversary Celebrations with Chrissy Teigen (Exclusive) John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen's 4 Kids: All About Luna, Miles, Esti and Wren “This was our kids’ first time at the Ronald McDonald House. We made our mochi pancakes, one of Chrissy’s recipes,” he says of his cookbook author wife. “And a lot of the kids that were there, some were patients, some were siblings of patients but our kids bonded with all of them quickly. They were playing basketball with them, having a good time. I enjoyed watching them.” John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Luna and Miles. Jerritt Clark/getty Legend says there’s an important lesson in that fun. “We try to teach them that it’s important to give back and to help other people,” he says. “They’ve gone with us to help feed people who are hungry, they’ve gone to homeless shelters with us. We try to teach them to be appreciative of what they have and also know that there are a lot of people that don’t have the privileges that they do, so we should do what we can to help them.” When it comes to helping RMHC families, Legend says this particular cause hits close to home. “The families are going through so much and having health problems with your baby is what no one wants to have,” says Legend of RMHC, which provides access to care and essential resources to families with children who are ill, injured or hospitalized across 260-plus chapters in 62 countries and regions. “We know from losing a pregnancy to just having friends of ours who have kids with health problems, it is just such a difficult experience and any help that you can get, any support is so valuable.”
