It was a Cruel summer, indeed.

In March of 1999, Cruel Intentions hit theaters, tantalizing audiences with its take on teen prep school culture and some of the characters involved in its seductive, sometimes dangerous, hierarchy.

The film helped further launch the stars of leads including Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar, and has remained a pop culture touchstone since its debut.

Here, on the movie's 25th anniversary, catch up with the cast, then and now.

While filming the hit CW series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003, Sarah Michelle Gellar appeared in a number of films including I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and Scream 2 (1997) as well as 1999's Cruel Intentions, in which she starred as the wealthy and popular — and devious — teen Kathryn.

Though the cocaine-addled Kathryn met her downfall in the film, Gellar's star continued to rise: She appeared in two Scooby-Doo films as Daphne, and starred in the 2004 horror movie The Grudge and its 2006 sequel. Additional film credits include 2007's Suburban Girl, 2009's Possession and 2022's Do Revenge.

The actress also starred on the short-lived TV series Ringer and The Crazy Ones and has a role on the Paramount+ show Wolf Pack.

Reese Witherspoon has had a booming career since playing the headmaster's virgin daughter Annette Hargrove, who in Cruel Intentions is seduced by playboy Sebastian — played by Witherspoon's real-life future (now ex) husband, Ryan Phillippe.

Her roles in films like Election (1999), Legally Blonde (2001), Sweet Home Alabama (2002) and Walk the Line (2005) garnered her praise and various award nominations and victories, including a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter Cash.

Witherspoon's notable film credits also include Water for Elephants (2011), Wild (2014), Home Again (2017) and Your Place or Mine (2023), among many others. On the small screen, she has starred on and executive produced Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere and plays opposite Jennifer Aniston on The Morning Show.

She was married to Phillippe for seven years and has two children, Ava and Deacon, with him. Witherspoon remarried in 2011 to talent agent Jim Toth, with whom she has one son, Tennessee James. The couple announced their divorce in March 2023.

Witherspoon launched clothing line Draper James in 2015 and also founded the production company Hello Sunshine.

Another target of bad boy Sebastian — as well as Kathryn — the seemingly naive Cecile, played by Selma Blair, harbored secrets of her own.

Following the film, Blair, alongside Witherspoon, starred in the 2001 comedy Legally Blonde. She also featured in a string of movies throughout the early aughts including The Sweetest Thing (2002), A Guy Thing (2003), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008).

She appeared on the television show Anger Management and as Kris Jenner on American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson in 2016.

In 2018, Blair revealed she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The actor has been open about her journey with the disease on social media as well as in the 2021 documentary Introducing, Selma Blair. In 2022, she broke barriers by competing on Season 31 of Dancing with the Stars. She announced her departure from the show on week five due to health concerns.

The Canadian actor has also had starring roles on Fringe, The Affair, Little Fires Everywhere and Dr. Death. Jackson recently starred on the Paramount+ show Fatal Attraction, which premiered in April 2023 and will appear in the new Karate Kid film at the end of 2024.

Jackson dated actress Diane Kruger from 2006 to 2016. He was then married to actress Jodie Turner-Smith, with whom he has one daughter. Turner-Smith filed for divorce in late 2023 and Jackson has since been linked to actress Lupita Nyong'o.
