Charli XCX Ponders Having a Baby but Still Feels 'Like a Kid' Herself: 'Don't Feel Like I Can Make That Decision'

Charli XCX is opening up about the idea of having children.

In a cover story interview with Rolling Stone UK, the alt-pop star — who announced her engagement to George Daniel of The 1975 last November — shared her thoughts on motherhood — and whether it's something she sees in her future.

Speaking about her friend and songwriting collaborator Noonie Bao becoming a parent, Charli (whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison) said: "It was crazy seeing her standing in the same clothes she’s always worn, but now she has this completely different perspective on life than I do. She’s not enforcing that on me; it’s just a fact. She’s not alive for the same reasons that I am now."

On one hand, the 31-year-old alt-pop star doesn't "want to conform to centuries of indoctrination.”

However, Charli often considers the societal implications of if she chooses to remain childfree.

“Am I less of a woman if I don’t have a kid? Will I feel like I’ve missed out on my purpose in life? I know we’re not supposed to say that, but it’s this biological and social programming," she told the outlet.

Charli continued: "There’s a lot of pressure on women to not talk about that stuff super openly, especially not in pop music or in music generally; we’re supposed to be sexy and free and fun and wild.”

The penultimate track of the "Vroom Vroom" artist's new album Brat — "I think about it all the time" — highlights her conflicted feelings about motherhood.

Should Charli decide to have children, it would requite extra planning because of her career.

"My circumstance involves me making a decision and being like, ‘I’m gonna come off my birth control. I’m not gonna tour. I’m going to see what George wants to do, and then we’re gonna try for a baby,’” the "Good Ones" singer said with the caveat: “I feel like a kid; I don’t feel like I can make that decision.”

However, Charli knows that at one point she will "have to make the decision."

"Because we have a clock," she said.

In November 2023, PEOPLE confirmed Charli was engaged to Daniel.

She initially shared a post of her engagement ring on her private Instagram account, before she officially revealed the news with photos of the couple on her public Instagram.

In her first post, Charli shared a casual selfie, flashing a diamond ring on her hand.

With the more official announcement on social media, she posted a carousel of her and her producer fiancé, 34, embracing and a tray of tea featuring a box with an engagement ring, seemingly showcasing how Daniel proposed.

She confirmed the news with a celebratory caption, adding, "charli xcx and george daniel f---ing for life!!!"
