The actors celebrated their 40th anniversary in November 2023, and as Madigan recalled of their first meeting decades ago, their connection was almost instant.

"It was like something you see in a movie or hear in a song," Madigan told Life in 1985, of first seeing Harris as he performed in Sam Shepard's play Cowboy in Los Angeles in 1980. "I just thought—'Well, there he is.' It was obvious to me that I'd see him again."
