One Day: See Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod Question 'Cosmic Mysteries' While Going from Friends to Lovers

It’s a will-they, won’t-they love story for the ages. 

Netflix has finally released a trailer for the upcoming British romantic drama One Day — and there’s no telling if the protagonists will finally stay together or fall apart. 

The streaming adaptation of Nicholls' 2009 novel follows characters Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (The White Lotus’s Leo Woodall) after they meet on graduation night in 1988. Emma immediately develops a crush on Dex, but their potential romance is quickly friend-zoned.

The story checks back in on the same day they met each years over the course of two decades, exploring an ever-evolving, always simmering connection as Emma explains in the trailer: “It’s one of the cosmic mysteries — how someone can go from being a total stranger to being the most important person in your life.” 

Emma believes she's destined to make a change in the world, while Dexter bounces through different countries, jobs and loves. Flashes of his adulthood show partying, fights and all the instability that comes with growing up. All the while, Emma doubts her own ability to make a difference. 

Dexter asks her, “You have all these people telling you how great you are. You’re smart and funny and talented. I’ve been telling you for years, so why don’t you believe it?”

Eventually, Emma confesses her old crush, starting a “what if” conversation. When Dexter wonders why her feelings never came out into the open, she shares, “Back in the late '80s, it was all I thought about," before addin, "I thought I finally got rid of you.” 

But Dexter counters, “I don’t think you can.”

Emma sums up the sweeping romance: “Imagine one selected day stuck out of your life, and think how different its cost would have been.”  

One Day was previously adapted for the big screen in a 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway as Emma and Jim Sturgess as Dexter.
