The Hunger Games instantly became a huge phenomenon when it first premiered in 2012.

Based on Suzanne Collins' 2008 young adult dystopian novel of the same name, the movie not only gave rave reviews from critics and fans alike but it catapulted the careers of its young stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. 

Following the success of the first film, three additional sequels were released based on Collins' books, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Throughout filming the cast created a strong bond with each other that has lasted long after the movies wrapped.

Though the original franchise ultimately came to an end with Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015, the story continues on with the 2023 prequel film, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen

Lawrence played Katniss Everdeen, a teenager from District 12 who volunteers for the Hunger Games after her younger sister's name is drawn during the reaping.

Though The Hunger Games wasn't Lawrence's first movie, it was without a doubt her breakout role, and she's been in the spotlight ever since. In between filming The Hunger Games series, Lawrence starred films including the X-Men series (2011–2019), American Hustle (2013) and Silver Linings Playbook (2012) which earned her an Oscar for Best Actress.

After a brief hiatus ("I didn't have a life. I thought I should go get one," she told Vanity Fair in 2021) Lawrence returned to acting in Netflix's star-studded film Don't Look Up (2021) and Hard Feelings (2023). Before that, she starred in Joy (2015) and the controversial mother! (2017). In 2019, Lawrence topped Forbes' list of highest-paid actresses.

In 2019, Lawrence married art gallerist Cooke Maroney, and in 2022, the two welcomed a son, Cy.

Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark

Hutcherson played Peeta Mellark, a baker from District 12 who enters the Hunger Games alongside Katniss.

Before scoring the role of Peeta, Hutcherson got his start as a child actor, appearing in Little Manhattan (2005), Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005) and Bridge to Terabithia (2007).

Following the Hunger Games films, Hutcherson has taken on more minor roles, including appearances in In Dubious Battle (2016) and The Disaster Artist (2017). From 2017 to 2020, he starred on Hulu's comedy series Future Man, which was executive produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Recently, Hutcherson returned to the big screen with the film adaptation of the hit video game, Five Nights at Freddy's.

Since 2013, Hutcherson has been in a relationship with Spanish actress Claudia Traisac.

Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne

In The Hunger Games films, Hemsworth played Gale Hawthorne, Katniss' devoted childhood best friend from District 12. Though Hemsworth's breakout role was 2010's The Last Song, The Hunger Games films put him on the map.

After the franchise ended in 2015, Hemsworth appeared in films like Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) and Arkansas (2020). In 2020, he produced and starred on the Quibi series Most Dangerous Game, which earned him an Emmy nomination for outstanding short-form comedy or drama series.

In 2022, it was announced that Hemsworth would be replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in the fourth season of Netflix's series adaptation of The Witcher.

Hemsworth is known for his tumultuous relationship with ex-wife Miley Cyrus, who he met while filming The Last Song. The couple married in 2018 but announced plans for divorce in 2019, which were finalized in 2020. Hemsworth has been dating actress Gabriella Brooks since his separation from Cyrus.

Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy

In the Hunger Games films, Harrelson played Katniss and Peeta's mentor, Haymitch Abernathy. The actor already had a noteworthy career before playing Haymitch (Cheers, anyone?) and has remained in the spotlight. Since then, he has acted in films including Now You See Me 2 (2016), The Edge of Seventeen (2016), Zombieland: Double Tap (2019), and Triangle of Sadness (2022), among many others.

Harrelson married his wife, Laura Louie, in 2008, and together they live in Maui, Hawaii. They share three daughters, Deni, Zoe and Makani.

Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket

Banks played Katniss and Peeta's fashionable Capitol-born chaperone, Effie Trinket, throughout the films.

Aside from The Hunger Games, Banks has enjoyed a decades-long performing career and is well-known for starring in the Pitch Perfect trilogy. In addition to acting, Banks has been working behind the camera more, making her feature directorial debut with Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), hosting and executive-producing the revival of Press Your Luck, as well as directing, producing, writing and starring in the reboot of Charlie's Angels (2019).

In 2020, it was announced that Banks would be playing Ms. Frizzle in a live-action adaptation of The Magic School Bus, though there has yet to be an update on that project since the announcement. In the meantime, Banks directed the 2023 film Cocaine Bear.

Banks has two sons, Felix and Magnus, with husband Max Handelman.

Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair

Sam Claflin stole fans' hearts when he played District 4 tribute Finnick Odair in Catching Fire, a role he reprised in the following two sequels.

Though Catching Fire wasn't Claflin's first big role, having previously starred in 2011's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, the Hunger Games franchise did put him on the map as an actor.

After Catching Fire, he continued to star in blockbuster films, including Love, Rosie alongside Lily Collins and Me Before You alongside Emilia Clarke.

Following several romance films, Claflin moved towards more dramatic roles with My Cousin Rachel, Adrift and the hit TV series Peaky Blinders, which he starred on from 2019 to 2022. Most recently, he starred on Amazon Prime Video's adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six alongside Riley Keough as the titular character.

On the personal front, Claflin was previously married to actress Laura Haddock from 2013 to 2019 when they announced their divorce. Together, the former couple share two children, a daughter named Margot and a son named Pip. Most recently, he has been dating model Cassie Amato.

Lenny Kravitz as Cinna

Rockstar Kravitz played Katniss' stylist, Cinna, in the first two Hunger Games films, marking one of his most significant film roles.

After starring in the Hunger Games movies, Kravitz continued to release music and performed alongside Katy Perry at the Super Bowl in 2015. Kravitz's eleventh studio album, Raise Vibration, was released in 2018.

He has also continued acting, appearing in several projects, including on FX's Better Things and Shotgun Wedding (2023) with Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel.

Kravtiz is the father of actress and model Zoë Kravitz.

Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman

Tucci was already a critically acclaimed actor before playing the eccentric Caesar Flickerman in the Hunger Games franchise and has appeared in many more films since, including the Oscar-winning Spotlight (2015), the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Supernova (2020). In 2022, Tucci played Clive Davis in the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

Tucci has expanded his family since the release of The Hunger Games. He and his wife, actress Felicity Blunt, welcomed their first child, Matteo Oliver, in January 2015 and their second child, Emilia Giovanna, in April 2018. Tucci also has three children, Isabel, Nicolo, and Camilla, from his previous marriage with his late wife, Kate.

Willow Shields as Primrose Everdeen

Shields played Katniss' younger sister Primrose in the Hunger Games films.

The Hunger Games marked Shields' feature film debut. Shields has since starred in several smaller projects, including Netflix's Spinning Out and Detective: Independence (2023).

Shields competed on Dancing with the Stars during season 20, where she became the youngest contestant to compete on the show at age 14. She and partner Mark Ballas finished the season in seventh place.

Donald Sutherland as President Snow

Sutherland played The Hunger Games' conniving President Snow, the principal antagonist of the series.

Sutherland was yet another Hunger Games star who had been acting for decades before the release of the franchise, with projects ranging from M*A*S*H to Pride & Prejudice (2005). He has also acted on FX's Trust and HBO's The Undoing, which earned him a Critics' Choice Television Award for best supporting actor in a movie/miniseries.

Sutherland is father to actor Kiefer Sutherland.

Julianne Moore already had a prolific career before playing the District 13 president in the final two Hunger Games films and has continued to have a noteworthy career since.

Following The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Moore moved towards more independent film roles, including Bel Canto and After the Wedding, the latter of which was directed by her husband Bart Freundlich.

In 2020, she notably portrayed feminist activist Gloria Steinem in the biopic The Glorias. The following year, she shared the screen with her celebrity doppelgänger Amy Adams in two separate films, The Woman in the Window and the film adaptation of Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen.

Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee

Philip Seymour Hoffman already had an impressive career before starring in the Hunger Games franchise, including an Academy Award and several Tony Award nominations.

First introduced in Catching Fire, the actor gained a whole new fanbase for his role as beloved gamekeeper Plutarch Heavensbee.

On Feb. 2, 2014, Hoffman died of a drug overdose at the age of 46. At the time of his death, Hoffman was filming the final Hunger Games movie, though he had already completed the majority of his scenes. His two remaining scenes were rewritten as a result of his absence.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which was released after his death in 2015, marked his final film.

Jeffrey Wright as Beetee

Jeffrey Wright already had several acting credits to his name, including Felix Leiter in the James Bond films, before playing District 3 tribute Beetee in Catching Fire. Following the film's release in 2013, Wright continued to play Beetee in the following two Hunger Games films.

In 2019, he starred in another big book adaptation when he played James Hobart in The Goldfinch. However, one of his biggest roles post-Hunger Games came in 2016 when he was cast in HBO's Westworld series as Bernard Lowe / Arnold Weber, a role that has often been compared to Beetee.

In 2021, he reprised his James Bond role as Felix Leiter in No Time to Die. The following year, he took on the iconic role of James Gordon in The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and is expected to return for the film's sequel The Batman – Part II in October 2025.

Additionally, Wright joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021 as he voiced The Watcher on Disney+'s animated series What If...?.

Jena Malone as Johanna Mason

After playing ​​District 7 tribute Johanna Mason in Catching Fire, Jena Malone reprised her role in the remaining Hunger Games films.

Following the franchise's completion in 2015, Malone has continued to work with some big names, including Elle Fanning in 2016's The Neon Demon and Riley Keough in 2016's Lovesong. In 2015, she had a mini Hunger Games reunion with Hutcherson as they played siblings in the short film The Rusted.

Malone has also ventured into music in recent years. In 2017, she was credited as co-writer and featured vocalist on the Foster the People track "Static Space Lover" from the band's third album, Sacred Hearts Club.

As for her personal life, Malone became a mother in May 2016 as she gave birth to a son named Ode Mountain with her then-boyfriend Ethan DeLorenzo. The couple announced their engagement in August 2016 but eventually split in 2019.

Mahershala Ali as Boggs

Though his first major film role was in 2008's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Mahershala Ali received wide attention for his role as Boggs in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 as well as House of Cards.

After the Hunger Games franchise, Ali continued to book big film and TV roles, including Luke Cage, True Detective and Moonlight, the latter of which earned him his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. With the win, he also made history as the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. Two years later, he received the award again for his role in 2018's Green Book.

Like Wright, Ali has recently joined the MCU. After making a small voice cameo in Eternals, the actor is set to portray Blade in the 2024 film of the same name.

His acting career aside, Ali has also become a father since the Hunger Games films, welcoming a daughter with his wife Amatus Sami-Karim in 2017.
