Meghan McCain won't be buying a ticket to the Off-Broadway musical Ghost of John McCain

The daughter of the late Sen. John McCain aired her feelings about the upcoming political parody musical, writing on social media that the production was "nothing more than a gross cash grab by mediocre desperate people."

"This is trash," she posted on Wednesday, April 3. "I hope it bombs."

PEOPLE reached out to representatives for the show.

Her words came as news broke that Ghost of John McCain would be making its world premiere at the Soho Playhouse in New York City this fall. Performances begin Labor Day weekend and run through Election Day, Nov. 5.

Written by Scott Elmegreen, with a score from composer and lyricist Drew Fornarola, the musical is described as "a unique psychological exploration of power, rivalry, and the human condition."

In the comedy, according to a release, "McCain contemplates a wonderful afterlife, but instead finds that 'heaven' is inside Donald Trump's brain, where a 'Greek Chorus' of iconic figures — including Hillary Clinton, Roy Cohn, Eva Peron, Teddy Roosevelt, Robert Jordan, and Lindsey Graham — rebel against the former president's relentless demands for affirmation."

Quixote Productions, founded by political strategist and public relations executive Jason Rose, is producing the musical, in conjunction with long-time John McCain consultant and public affairs executive Max Fose.

Casting and the show's full creative team will be announced at a later date. Catie Davis, the associate director on Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge! The Musical, will direct.

Meghan, who hosts the podcast Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat, has made no secret of the close bond with her dad, who died at 81 on Aug. 25, 2018, after a lengthy treatment for brain cancer.

"Been a weirdly hard few weeks missing him," Meghan wrote on Instagram in February 2022. "Grief never goes away, sending love to all of those who are also on the journey."

She's previously admitted that losing her father had been "harder than I thought it would be."

"We talked a few times a day and I miss his laugh and dark sense of humor the most," she shared on social media in August 2020. "Grief doesn't get easier but in my experience the pain does get quieter in time. I still wake up every day missing him."

And while she may not have faith in Ghost of John McCain, Fose and Rose both said in a release their intentions are not to make a mockery of Sen. McCain's legacy.

"Having served him for nearly two decades, I believe Senator McCain would laugh at this entertainment and be grateful his legacy continues to spark important conversation, from the serious to the absurd,' said Fose. "Our hope is that this musical will remind America our democracy is worth fighting for.”

“Our goal is not to be just another poker turning up the heat, but to bring some relief, relevance, and comedy to the body politic," added Rose. "We may be in a presidential election year, but this is an evergreen story anchored by the tension and dynamic between two titans of the past century. The musical is surreal.”
