About

Bober also known as Kurwa Bóbr or Bobrze is a meme centered around videos of Polish men recording beavers, oftentimes swearing or exclaiming in excitement at spotting one. Videos of Polish men chasing beavers and calling them expletives can be traced back as early as the year 2012 on YouTube, the phrase "Bober" largely grew popular as a meme on iFunny in the year 2018. Videos featuring Polish people chasing and recording Beavers continued to grow in popularity and spread to TikTok in the year 2023.

Origin

The word "bóbr" means "beaver" in the Polish language, while the word "bobrze" is used to refer to a specific beaver. One of the oldest videos of a Polish person following and recording a "Kurwa Bóbr" is an October 5th, 2012 post by YouTuber[1] Krowi. The post gathered over 260,000 views in 11 years (seen below, left). Another early "Bóbr" video was posted by Youtuber[2] Marcin Kalinowski on April 12th, 2014, gathering over 600,000 views in nine years (seen below, right).



A notable "Bóbr" video was posted to YouTube[3] by Fred Pierwszy Wielki on April 26th, 2017. The video shows a man cackling while chasing a beaver, gathering over 8 million plays in six years (seen below).

Memes featuring the aforementioned video by YouTuber Fred Pierwszy Wielki grew popular on iFunny in 2018, as seen in a November 2nd, 2018 post by AhyredGunn[4] that gathered over 400 likes in five years (seen below, left) and a November 4th video by Triaim[5] (seen below, right).



In 2023, memes about Beavers and Polish people or Slavic people in general began to spread to TikTok, with TikToker[6] @based__belarusian posting a meme on March 13th, 2023 that gathered over 270,000 plays and 43,000 likes in nine months (seen below, left). An October 11th video by TikToker[7] @kaan.euu gathered over 31 million plays and 3.9 million likes in a month (seen below, right). The animal featured in the clip appears to be a wombat.
