In my Portfolio classes at SCAD, I have students design their websites around storytelling to add value to their projects and to make their portfolios stand out from the crowd. The layouts are anything but generic. They capture and hold interest easily.
-
During interviewing, I conduct interviews in rooms where our branding and storytelling is incorporated onto the walls. We use timelines and graphics to tell our story and promote our mission and vision. This communicates the professionalism of our organization and the sincerity with which we share the organizational impact.

Storytelling in graphic design is super important. It's not just about making things look nice; it's about telling stories that grab your attention. Think about famous logos like Nike's swoosh or Apple's apple with a bite—it's not just a picture, it's a whole story. In an interview, I'd show how I've used storytelling in my designs to make them more meaningful and memorable, whether it's logos, websites, or ads. It's all about making people feel something when they see your work.
-
During an interview, I'd highlight the power of storytelling in graphic design by showcasing projects where narrative-driven visuals enhanced communication and engagement. For example, I could present a branding campaign where I crafted visuals that conveyed the client's brand story, eliciting emotional connections with the audience. I'd emphasize how storytelling elements such as compelling imagery, typography, and color schemes can effectively convey messages, evoke responses, and leave a lasting impact on viewers. By demonstrating the ability to weave narratives into design, I'd illustrate the importance of storytelling in creating memorable and impactful graphic design solutions.

Storytelling is when you have to visualise or fantasise a concept. It’s when you have to make-believe. A storyboard is a best example of storytelling and a best way to develop your visual storytelling skills. A few years ago, during a job interview at an IT company, I was asked to draw out a storyboard so as to showcase my visual storytelling skills, as they were for someone who could animate explainer videos for them and their clients. I came through in flying colours as they were deeply impressed by my skills. Hence, I got the job.

During an interview, it's beneficial to demonstrate your understanding of storytelling through specific examples from your portfolio. For each piece, explain the story behind the design: the client’s goals, the target audience, and how the visual elements were chosen and arranged to narrate the client's message. This helps to illustrate your thought process and how you apply storytelling principles in your work.
-
Your work should stand alone. Let it tell the story. If you need to explain anything never be clinical. Just talk about it like you would describe something your friend did the other night at that crazy party. Design is fun. Don't turn it into something more precious than it is.
-
You should definitely mention real-life statistics when discussing the impact of storytelling in graphic design on business and marketing. For instance, you could highlight that incorporating storytelling into visuals can boost engagement by up to 300%. Additionally, mentioning that companies using storytelling in branding experience a 20% rise in brand affinity and a 25% increase in customer loyalty would make your point more persuasive. Don't forget to mention the 30% uptick in sales conversion rates due to effective storytelling through graphic design. Using these concrete statistics will effectively showcase the tangible benefits of storytelling in the business and marketing context.

I have found that giving two examples creates a gated path to gain understanding. Taking two projects that are seemingly unrelated and revealing each projects backstory. Using a timeline and storyboard of the path it took to create the final product. The client gains understanding of the process and starts to invest and see the level of value.
-
Storytelling is powerful because it builds an emotional connection with the audience. Discuss how your designs have tapped into viewer’s emotions—whether through color, typography, or imagery—to make the content more relatable and engaging. For instance, a campaign for a charity might use compelling visuals and narratives that evoke empathy and prompt action.
-
In graphic design, storytelling is not just about aesthetics; it's also a strategic tool for problem solving. Explain how you have used storytelling to address and solve specific challenges in your projects. For example, you might describe a project where the main issue was low engagement, and how through a redesign that incorporated a stronger narrative element, the engagement significantly improved.
-
Effective storytelling extends to how you communicate with clients. Describe how you use narrative to present your ideas and designs to clients, helping them visualize the potential impact of the project. This approach can aid in clearer understanding and better feedback from clients, and it can streamline the design process.
-
I have always found it helpful to engage the client by asking them their story. Generally clients want the end result without understanding the process. In fact the more seeds you plant with them in the process of story and understanding their needs the better. The seeds you plant are details that will create depth and a tapestry that conveys everything that’s important to the client. Ultimately the final products that are built on detailed communication and storytelling are a foundation for greater success. Clients who are invested in a storytelling project become the best clients.
-
Being able to utilize new tech or techniques or platforms can help aim the project to the correct audience. However, a story is an arc no matter the form you in which you deliver it.
-
I'd explain that storytelling in graphic design isn't just about aesthetics - it's about connecting with viewers on a deeper level. By crafting a narrative through visuals, we can evoke emotions, make information memorable, and ultimately drive results.
