Analysing client feedback can be the toughest hurdle. It requires taking a step back and separating the feedback from your personal identity. My approach is to view it as if it were directed at a teammate of equal standing. This perspective allows me to identify potential mistakes, areas for improvement, or even a mismatch between my skills and the specific client type. Creating a small database of this feedback would be extremely beneficial. The goal would be to identify any recurring negative behaviors or, on the contrary, to uncover any strengths that you were previously unaware of.

Look for common themes or recurring issues in the feedback. This can highlight areas where you consistently excel or need improvement. For negative feedback, conduct an analysis to understand the underlying reasons. This helps in addressing the core issues rather than just the symptoms.

First, identify specific, actionable goals you want to achieve. For example, if clients have mentioned that your contract terms are too complex, make it a goal to simplify the language in your next draft. Establish a timeline to accomplish this, such as reviewing and revising your contract templates within a month. By setting these objectives, you create a clear path for improvement, ensuring that the feedback leads to concrete enhancements in your negotiation abilities. This structured approach helps you focus on measurable outcomes and continually refine your skills.

Once you've had these conversations and carefully analyzed the outcomes, both positive and negative, you should establish clear goals for how to improve in your areas of opportunity or take your strengths to the next level. To illustrate, if one of the patterns you've noticed in these conversations is a need to enhance your written communication skills with clients, you could enroll in a short course on the topic. Another example might be if a client expressed a lack of perceived team involvement. In this case, you could collaborate with the team to address these concerns or take a leadership course.

Once you've decided to gather client feedback, it's crucial to establish a "before and after" approach. This means that after implementing an action plan, you should once again solicit feedback from clients to assess whether you've made progress compared to previous instances. Carefully organize the data obtained from these conversations to establish a baseline for comparing the "new versions" – the responses you receive after implementing the changes.

Seeking feedback on continuous basis is an ok strategy when the feedback is justified and not too burdensome for the client or counterparty. Do not become another supermarket asking for a feedback on their service after you’d purchased a sandwich. Nor should the feedbacks be ten minutes long surveys. I mean, sometimes feedback requests make clients angry, where the transaction was a’ok in other respects.
