It depends on your ultimate goal: do you want to be identified with a specific style? Like Avedon or Irwing. Or, are you photographing primarily as an avocation, or have an eclectic taste? If latter, then you may not be too concerned about a niche. If formed, then knowing what’s important to you, what resonates with you, what moves you, what gets you out of the house making images, then go for it. Don’t. do something because others expect you to do. With that insight in hand, have at it to let your style organically evolve. People think as they write and photograph. Niche, or differentiator will evolve. Most of our work is derivative and composite, a result of interactions with others’ work and our conscious or unconscious influences.

Just as it pays to observe a subject before photographing, the same applies to a new niche. Start by following related social accounts and hashtags within that niche. Ask questions. Why is this niche popular? Who are the main audience? How many styles can you identify with in this niche? Is there a sizable learning curve for me if I dip into this niche? Use social media to explore. Reach out to the artists you're now admiring. Ask them questions too. What are their top niche challenges? Finally, ask your own audience. Once you're ready to try out the new niche, post samples and ask your audience if they like it. People love being asked for their opinion!

Expanding into new niches & markets in digital photography through social media involves a multifaceted approach. Begin by thoroughly researching and identifying potential niches that align with your expertise. Optimize your social media profiles, particularly on visually-centric platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, to showcase a diverse portfolio that reflects your versatility. Craft targeted content tailored to the preferences of the identified niches, utilizing relevant hashtags for increased visibility. Actively engage with online communities and forums specific to these niches, fostering connections and showcasing your work. Collaborate with influencers, run targeted ads, and leverage social media analytics to refine your strategy.

I was very late to social media! I only joined in 2016 to resist and to connect with my high school friends. Then I started to post photos of my yoga studio, then later I started to share my work. I published my domain in 2013. I’d post pictures from there and work in progress across platforms and suddenly I started to have followers. Later in 2019 I joined Instagram and posted all of my wild work on female representation, globalization and its relationship to social media. I joined LinkedIn Native Light Photography in 2008 then that blew up to 11K followers where I post work in progress and connect with amazing artists and professionals who’s careers are related to art. I share and repost compelling work I’ve met so many amazing people!

What is a niche. I am a generalist when it comes to photography. In other words, I work in all fields -- from journalism to editorial, to fine art to wildlife and landscapes to street photography to advertising to sports to theatre. So what is my niche. A good photograph, Again, be your own toughest critic and show only your best work. Most photographers are not like me and concentrate on a specific subject or two. Then you must seek a specific audience.... Good luck....
-
Be sure to look around, some photography fields are more active on instagram, some twitter, some more in facebook groups or flickr. Get a good overview of what others are doing, but don't just copy them, see what you can add to the field to do something different or unique to your work.
-
In my honest opinion, I recommend a thoughtful approach to niche selection. Opt for an area where you possess substantial expertise or a unique skill set—an area where you can outshine others. Once you've identified your niche, understand your target audience, and meticulously test and refine your content until you achieve tangible results. Consistency in content creation and posting is key; understand the optimal timing and platforms for your posts. Additionally, strive to establish a cohesive and recognizable brand identity across all your artistic endeavors, ensuring that your photographic portfolio collectively reflects your distinct style and message.

In my 15 years of doing photography I have became more diverse in the objects I shoot. I had added nature shots to my portfolio. I love to capture sunrises and sunsets..

Find artists in sculpture, music, paintings, illustration, cinemas, and don’t limit yourself to photography alone. You can then simultaneously explore different niches in diverse areas — all will reach us unique insights. And ultimately everyone is trying to do the same: interpret the reality as they perceive it and share their interpretations in the form of various artifacts — images, moving or still, sculpture, drawn or made of stone, and all other products of artistic expressions. Others niches become ours and vice versa. Share freely, learn humbly, practice persistently, and remember to have fun doing so! Explore with an open mind; it is the only way to become better versions of ourselves!

Testing repeatedly is key for photographers on social media because it's all about figuring out what resonates with your audience. Different styles, captions, and posting times can have varied impacts, and only by trying out a mix can you truly understand what grabs attention and engagement. Plus, social media trends and algorithms change constantly, so regular testing keeps you ahead of the game, ensuring your content stays relevant and effective.

IMO, the pros who stopped by to share their experiences and thoughts are Bang on, i doubt I'll be able to add more beside the premium solution offered upon appointment

Social media is growing day by day. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Add your booking service to your social media account, using polls and questions to understand your audience and seeing what other photographers are doing can really help boots your work. AI is changing the way we take photos. You can change your photos completely! Try looking into things like this and see how that aligns with your work.

I’m definitely open to trying new niches with my photography. Also expanding my skills. I want to learn how to get into taking wedding and portrait photography for potential clients in the future.

Sometimes you have to get your work in front of people in person. Most of my clients came from word of mouth. I tried running social media campaigns but never really had any luck. Once people started seeing my photography printed on billboards around my city, I began to be viewed more as an expert in my field. These were opportunities that stemmed from me displaying my photography inside the Jacksonville International Airport.

I agree with this 100%. Assuming your goal is to grow your brand, these evaluations help you decide what new directions yield positive results and engagement with current customers as well as new potential customers.

I think having passion for a particular niche is very important. If you find success in a niche, but are not passionate about it, your work may suffer. On the other hand, if you find success in a niche you’re passionate about, you will push harder to make a presence and connect with others in that field. I have done this with my photography over the past few years. I experimented with many niches, finally settling on wildlife, and have grown my connections locally and around the country. Making a presence and feeling like you have an engaging audience is a great motivator to keep you going in the niche your passionate about.

I had taken photos of my cat recently. They attract a different crowd of like minded photographers that show content with their pets.

I started getting into photography when I was a senior in high school. The best piece of advice I can share is that it takes years to develop a brand. Also, it's a good idea to develop your skills in other areas such as graphic design and videography. Depending on whether you plan on working for a company, continuing to freelance, or securing a competitive internship, it helps to have skills in all areas of digital media.

Ah, the open road of creative expression! This space is your canvas, paintbrush, and megaphone all in one. Share anything that tickles your imagination – a quirky travel tale, a thought-provoking photography anecdote, a spark of insight that illuminates the ordinary. Be the unexpected twist in the story, the hidden treasure map, the secret sauce that makes this whole exchange even richer. I'm here to listen, learn, and maybe even get a little mind-blown. So, unleash your inner storyteller, photographer, philosopher – let's explore what lives beyond the categories! I'm excited to see where this leads

A professional does the job he’s qualified for. Remember Camera is just a tool (in depreciation) use/get the right one, don’t oversize on body’s, invest in lenses, do not rely much in post, walk/move instead of zooming and find a niche that suits your style, let authorial work for the artists. I got some experience (since 1999) in motorsport in Brazil, Europe and US so as architecture, studio still life for advertising.

All in all people gravitate to what they like. Take photos of scenes you like and the people who are meant to find it will. Good marketing helps but it doesn’t create lasting fans and customers. You get that by creating great art and making a space for an audience to gather.
