One should appreciate that different organizations have different ways of doing things and different people have very different expectations of the best way of engagement. For example, some managers like have a regular updates by emails, some prefer to knock your doors, some might not completely leave you alone unless you proactively engage. Do not assume the next manager would work ghe same way as the last manager. The best way to understand each other is to have open and transparent conversations, especially when you have a new manger or join a new team.

An effective approach to optimizing team communication begins with recognizing the diverse communication styles among team members. For instance, assertive communicators value directness and honesty, while passive communicators might shy away from direct confrontation. Understanding these preferences is key to facilitating clear and productive exchanges, ensuring that every team member can contribute to their fullest potential. It’s this awareness that lays the groundwork for a collaborative environment where ideas can flow freely and everyone feels heard.

Leading a team of scientists and engineers is very different to leading a team of marketers or growth leaders . As a CEO - it is vital to have the mental flexibility to adapt your communication style to the audience . My engineering team loves 10-15’ meetings that go straight to the point ! My marketing / growth team loves long details conversations about and around the needs of our clients !

There are several effective leadership assessment tools available for evaluating team communication styles. But my favorite one is Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which categorizes individuals into different personality types based on their preferences in areas such as communication, decision-making, and problem-solving.

Tools are only as good as their users. Using a Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing model realize that your Norming and Performing stages are where you get to lead. Often these two stages blend together and allow you to assess your team. Using tools will only provide a few places to look, you will have to pay attention to physical and verbal questions to pull anything away that is useable. Get to the norming/performing stage first and then open your toolbox.

Once you realize the importance of understanding communication styles, the next step is figuring out which tools to use. There are many assessment tools available for leaders to understand their team members' communication preferences. These tools can be simple questionnaires that uncover how individuals like to communicate, or they can be more detailed analyses that look into how people handle stress in interactions. The important thing is to pick an assessment that delves deep enough to grasp the subtleties of your team's communication dynamics. For example, a simple questionnaire might reveal basic preferences, while a more detailed analysis could uncover how team members adapt their communication styles in high-pressure situations.

Consider discovering the Harrison Assessment. While finding your personality profile, you also focus on communicating as usual and under stress.

When selecting a communication assessment tool for your team, it's crucial to ensure it meets your team's specific needs and is easy to implement. The tool should offer actionable insights for improvement, respect confidentiality, and fit comfortably within the team's dynamics. It's also important that it can be integrated into ongoing development plans, is culturally sensitive, grounded in evidence-based research, and comes with effective feedback mechanisms. Additionally, consider the cost-effectiveness and availability of long-term support to help apply and sustain the insights gained. Choosing the right tool is about balancing these factors to enhance team communication and productivity efficiently.

Curiosity sometimes kills. To keep people curious in a good way, implement a few “mandatory fun” events. For those who may not be aware what that is, mandatory fun is a scheduled event where like minded people MUST attend. Virtual or in person, your team will begin to function more when they know each other. Ice breakers are broken, off-sites seem to be on-site nowadays - so make fun your strategy, and mandate some events. What you do will be team dependent so your first attempt may fail - just keep trying things out until your team decides they want to run the Mandatory fun event themselves. People connect better when something sucks and mandates seem to fit into the “this is going to suck” category. Try it and see.

Implementing strategies that cater to the identified communication styles is the logical next step after assessment. For instance, assertive communicators thrive in open discussions, while passive communicators might prefer structured settings that provide a sense of safety for expression. Adapting leadership methods to these needs is crucial. In my experience, customizing interactions based on communication styles has led to more effective and inclusive team participation. This tailored approach ensures that every team member can contribute optimally, enhancing overall team performance and cohesion.

Tailoring strategies means more than just accommodating preferences; it's about creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. Mix open dialogues with structured sessions to accommodate different styles and foster an atmosphere of respect and creativity.

Feedback is overrated. Focus on positive things, point them out as soon as they happen and those things will multiply. That is what I like to call feedforward and it’s WAY BETTER than feedback.
-
Numbers and metrics are essential, do not be mistaken. But there’s only so much that data will show. Team dynamics, adaptability, ethics and integrity, alignment with company vision… all of those can mostly only be assessed by feeling and understanding, not data. Make sure you’re getting that information, whether it be from peers, subordinates, or managers.
-

It's like peeling back the layers to reveal what makes each person unique. And with 360-degree feedback surveys, everyone gets a chance to share their perspective, making communication more open and inclusive.
-
One of the most important aspect of communiaction as a leader is ensuring that your message is understood well and this calls for adaptability by the leader to the type of person in the team and also the occasion in which communication is taking place to ensure that the message is passed across well and heard.
-
-
Strong leadership requires you to crack the code of communication inside your team. The secret is to actively listen, accept different points of view, and modify communication methods as needed. Remember the importance of feedback: establish a secure environment for it, concentrate on certain tasks, and express gratitude. Establishing transparent communication will help you create a productive team that enjoys working together.
-
Adaptability isn't just about adjusting to change; it's about embracing diversity within the team. Encourage members to appreciate and leverage each other's strengths, fostering a culture where flexibility and empathy are celebrated.
-
Adapt and overcome. It’s different for everyone. People think they have to be superheroes, Doctors, or Navy SEALS to face challenges - they don’t. You know your environment better than any of the overqualified job titles that I just listed. Listen and do what is needed, in your own life. Don’t wait for someone else, they’ll never be able to be YOU like you. You are an expert, I empower you to use your expertise. Go. Do. Great. Things.
-
Understanding communication styles is an ongoing process. As teams evolve with new members and changing projects, communication dynamics can shift. Continually reassessing and learning about your team's communication styles is crucial to staying attuned to their needs and maintaining strong leadership. Additionally, psychological safety is essential for fostering interactions, accountability, and shared learning within teams. Cultivating a culture of continuous learning is paramount.

Continuous learning keeps us on the cutting edge, pushing us into new realms of innovation and expertise. By dedicating ourselves to lifelong education, we not only sharpen our own skills but also greatly enhance our ability to communicate, ensuring we can connect more effectively with others and thrive together in a constantly changing world.
-
Change is the only constant, this holds true for everything and everyone. Especially in work setups where teams collaborate on projects, daily tasks and experience changing work equation, internal/external environment, failures/success. Leadership is a continued learning process and so is listening. Regular check-ins, open and inclusive communication practices, emotional intelligence often helps with identifying, encouraging a team's diverse communication styles. This also helps a leader build trust within a team, enabling their leadership. Acknowledgement and celebration of instances of effective communication and teamwork helps reinforce positive communication behaviours and motivates the team to continue improving.
-
Consider using popular assessment tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), DiSC Assessment, or the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI). These tools provide valuable insights into individual communication styles and preferences, aiding leaders in understanding their team dynamics better. For instance, conducting an MBTI assessment workshop can help team members recognize their own and others' communication styles, fostering empathy and cooperation. Choosing a recognized assessment tool ensures credibility and provides a common language for discussing communication preferences within the team.
-
Consider using the DISC assessment tool for understanding communication styles. It categorizes individuals into four main types: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. This straightforward model provides actionable insights into how team members prefer to communicate, make decisions, and approach tasks. By incorporating DISC assessments into your leadership strategy, you can gain valuable insights into your team's dynamics and tailor your communication approach accordingly, fostering a more harmonious and productive work environment.
-
Identifying individuals' communication styles and creating inclusive strategies to ensure every voice is heard is critical, but in my experience, you have to be careful not to lose sight of the bigger picture to really make this happen. It's important to also consider the dynamics of the organization's overall communication and how to leverage effective strategies and tools to encourage cross-functional collaboration and amplify great ideas, no matter where the ideas come from in the organization. You should always seek to have your organization be more than the sum of its parts - including its communications capabilities.
-
You can also leverage some of the popular tools and online assessments to identify your teams’ communication preferences and styles. Listing down couple of options below: Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): MBTI assesses personality types based on four dichotomies (e.g., introversion vs. extroversion, thinking vs. feeling). It can reveal communication preferences and how team members process information. DiSC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness): DiSC is a popular personality assessment that categorizes individuals into different communication styles. The assessment provides insights into dominant, influential, steady, and conscientious communication styles.
