State Police Investigating Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash in Newark

The Delaware State Police are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred this morning in Newark that left one man dead.

On May 11, 2024, at approximately 11:25 a.m., a Chevrolet Cruze was driving eastbound East Chestnut Hill Road turning left onto Chestnut Crossing Drive. At the same time, a Ford Mustang was driving westbound on East Chestnut Hill Road in the left lane. The preliminary investigation revealed that the Ford was driving at an apparent high rate of speed and the front of the Ford hit the passenger side of the Chevrolet.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 47-year-old man from New Castle, Delaware, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The unrestrained back-seat passenger, a 27-year-old man from Newark, Delaware, was ejected from the car. He was transported to an area hospital where he died. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The driver of the Ford, a 19-year-old man from Newark, Delaware, was not injured.

The roadway was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this crash to contact Sergeant J. Jefferson by calling (302) 365-8484. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
