To prevent burnout you must have some basic wellbeing hygiene commitments on a daily basis. Employees must be treated first as human beings and then as human resources. Work must always be the focus and employees must be supported to do their best at work. Sometimes this support may take the shape of training where they learn to take care of their personal and emotional baggage effectively so as to be able to engage productively at work.

In my role as a team-building strategist, one critical aspect I emphasize is the early recognition of burnout signs, which is pivotal in mitigating its impact. A real-life example from my experience involved a project team showing early signs of stress, such as missed deadlines and decreased engagement. We conducted an immediate workshop to openly discuss these indicators, which not only helped in acknowledging the issue but also in reinforcing support among team members. This proactive approach allowed us to redistribute tasks more effectively and introduce regular mental health check-ins, preventing burnout and maintaining the team's overall morale and productivity.

Very true, and from my daily work perspective a well supported approach makes a real difference to the work system - to the person as well as the group, institute, network...!

GPT In my work with various teams, setting clear boundaries has proven essential for preventing burnout and promoting a healthy work-life balance. For example, we implemented a policy where no emails were to be sent after 6 PM or during weekends, unless critical. This policy was not only advocated but also practiced from the top down, starting with myself as the leader. By actively demonstrating respect for personal time, it encouraged team members to disconnect without guilt, contributing to better mental health and increased productivity during work hours.

Building trust with the leadership group is one of the highest priorities! Share vulnerabilities and war stories, family dynamics and family activities, as well as other personal information to emphasize that we are all more than employees and we are people with personal lives first. One of the personal messages I to share is the following quote, “the needs of the many do not always outweigh the needs of the few or the one”. The individual team members need to know that you have their back even if a mistake is made. Emphasize that honest and frequent open communication is the mission! Lastly help your staff in the balancing of both their priorities and lives outside of work as well as their performances within the job environment.
