#CricketTwitter gets bigger and bolder with new global campaign

By
Tuesday, 23 November 2021

Over the years, Twitter has changed and redefined the way people experience sports. Raising the game further, this year we launched a global campaign to celebrate #CricketTwitter and serve the public conversation around this much-loved sport. Between 01 July 2020 - 01 July 2021, there have been over 75 million conversations about cricket on the service in India alone. Fans from across cities in India Tweeted about the nationally loved sport, keeping Twitter abuzz with conversations. The Indian city of Kolkata roared the loudest on the service followed by Bengaluru, New Delhi and Chennai.

Sports enthusiasts already come to Twitter to share moments of high emotion, connect with athletes, teams, fans, and the community at large. Twitter’s real-time nature offers them an opportunity to stay in touch with what’s happening in the world of sports as and when it happens. To further enhance fans’ immersive second-screen experience, we launched:

  • A live scorecard accessible through the Explore tab and live Events Page

Fans can follow the scores from the match in real-time while scrolling through Tweets. This means that when fans on Twitter are engaging in real-time match conversations, they won’t have to go anywhere else to keep up with the scores. The scorecard is available to everyone in India on iOS as well as the Web, and to most people on Android.

Communities started testing in the US in September of this year as a way for people to find and connect with others who want to talk about the same things as them. They are started and managed by people on Twitter — moderators who enforce Community rules and keep conversations informative, relevant, and fun. They are currently only accessible through invite and while Community Tweets are publicly available, only members in the same Community are able to reply and join the conversation so it stays intimate and relevant. This is just the start for Communities – we’ll test, learn, and iterate based on your feedback. Find out more about how Communities work here.

There are more sports fans in the ‘Twitter stands’ than ever as they can experience cricket in a personalised way on the service with -

  • Event pages: All matches played across the cricket league season have dedicated Event pages where people can follow the latest updates from the games in one place. Fans are able to stay tuned into what their favourite teams, players and experts are Tweeting, and also view premium video content from Twitter’s partners.
  • Premium content from sports broadcasters: Twitter has partnered with several publishers and broadcasters such as Star Sports and Sony Sports to bring exclusive sports content to audiences on the service. People can tune in for highlights, in-match clips and more to enjoy a second-screen experience #OnlyOnTwitter.
  • Topics: Topics use machine learning to deliver interest-specific Tweets to people’s timelines. Twitter has introduced a dedicated Cricket Topic for fans to stay tuned to the latest updates from on and off the pitch.
  • Twitter Lists: Lists allow people to put together several accounts that Tweet about a subject, and follow Tweets from these accounts as a separate timeline. People can put together their own Lists, or follow existing Lists like these from Twitter Moments India (@MomentsIndia) - Cricket, India Cricket, ICC Women's T20 World Cup, Delhi Capitals IPL team, Chennai Super Kings Team, among others.
  • Twitter Spaces: Spaces is Twitter’s live audio feature that lets people come together to have intimate conversations via voice. People can host or join an ongoing cricket Space to discuss their favourite matches while they’re happening live, talk about a recent update from the cricket universe or to just remember and re-live a memorable match from when they were kids. Take a look at these Spaces by Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Star Sports for inspiration.
