The AirTag has been relatively the same since its launch three years ago. However, that soon might change. Apple is reportedly working on a new version of the popular tracker.

Codenamed B589, the new version of the tracker is in testing with manufacturing partners in Asia and is on-track to launch in mid-2025, according to Bloomberg. Details are scant. Bloomberg says only that it will offer "better chip with improved location tracking."

The current version of the AirTag has been credited with helping to track down everything from missing luggage to stolen cars. Late last year, Washington D.C., distributed AirTags to residents in some neighborhoods to make it easier for officers to track down stolen vehicles.

But there has also been controversy over people using AirTags to stalk others. Initially, there was no way to notify an Android user if an AirTag has been placed in their belongings or on their car. Subsequent updates made it easier for those with Android phones to get alerts.

That wasn't enough to shield Apple from a class-action lawsuit, which argues that AirTags have become the weapon of choice for stalkers.
