The solar mount has given me problems since I've had it and I gotta safe eject and re insert the flash drive daily to get it to back up cause it fails everyday but completes after reinserting it into the sync module 2, the first solar mount didn't work at all and I had to send it back, I'm on my second solar mount now and my 2nd set of regular AA lithium batteries. The new solar mount didn't work either so I charged the 18650 battery that comes in the solar mount and put it back together and now it's reading external power ok, I'll see how long it lasts. The customer service is great as far as working with me but it sucks calling them 3 times a week and sending emails plus my free trial ran out and I'm out like 20 bucks in Energizer lithium batteries that I've had to replace due to the solar mount not working. I suggest wiring it with a aftermarket USB cord that specifically works with the camera and creates a good seal, anyway I hope this helps, I also have the door Bell blink camera and it's "ok" at best... 3 stars I'd say. Good luck people, this is a legit review! Picture, motion detection, night vision is all pretty good, not the best but not the worst, think 3mp camera on best and 2mp on standard, it works.******Update*******The blink team is truly committed to satisfying there customers, I was contacted and offered replacement batteries and a extra 18650 just in case the other one ends up being bad, so far I've reset everything and charged the original 18650 and everything is working as it should so I'm satisfied and I would recommend this system if not just for the customer support but the cameras are very useful for security and show a good picture and have great motion detection, the IR night vision needs to be set high to be really visible but it definitely does the job!
Purchased in Jan 2022, operated fine for about 18 months, then started receiving low battery warnings (symbol and verbal from Alexa). Purchased new lithium batteries and replaced them in the cam. After 3 weeks another low battery warning, so I replaced the rechargeable one and the lithium ones again. Still low battery warnings. Deleted cam and reset everything up again, 2 days and low battery warnings again. Voltages on lithiums show they’re depleted, rechargeable shows about 3.5 volts. You can follow my purchases of batteries on my Amazon account.
Appears solar panel has stopped working correctly. HELP!
Update 5/2024. Customer representative Cooper reached out personally to help with my problem with the solar unit/cam. After some back and forth questions, they sent a new unit. Works perfectly so far. Communication was excellent between customer service and me. Very pleased, thank you Cooper!
I have had this solar charger camera for just under a year. I also have a doorbell camera that runs on the 1.5v batteries. The solar charged batteries have just given a warning they are dead. While the doorbell standard non solar powered are still fine I paid extra for the solar feature and never expected to have to lug out the 10ft ladder ever again. Guess I was wrong. Not happy with that or that I paid more for a feature that doesn’t work. And yes, the solar panel is set in the correct position, it receives the vast majority of the daylight. Disappointed
Blinked fixed the issue immediately. Customer support was excellent. Thank you, reviewed changed because of it
Since 2022, I have spent $433.04 on blink products, and $64.20 on the blink cloud service.
I have one blink module, one doorbell, two indoor cameras, three XT2 outdoor cameras, and three blink solar cameras.
The gripes I have with the blink module is that it is quite finicky. Before I purchased the cloud service, the system would randomly refuse to write to the USB drive. Now that I've purchased the cloud service, the blink module never succeeds with backing up the videos to the USB drive.
Restart it, redo the whole system (adding all cameras again), log out, log in, reposition the module, sacrifice a goat .. doesn't matter.
It simply works whenever it does, and you can't predict when that will be.
The doorbell, as wasn't clearly advertised, is not capable of running off the electrical power supplied to the unit from the doorbell transformer. It eats very expensive batteries. Probably 10 every four months.
The XT2 units are relatively ok in function, but again, do eat batteries.
The best of the best has been the indoor units. Pretty solid, but useless whenever the module randomly decides it doesn't want to work for a few days.
But this review is mainly about the Blink Solar mounts.
I purchased three Blink Solar units whenever they were at a steep discount in December '22.
Just got around to hanging them up, and I now know why they were so cheap.
The solar panels included with Blink Solar simply do not function. The main reason I purchased them is that they are supposed to be powered by the sun, so that I don't have to keep shelling out money to feed them.
I received three units, and not one of the solar panels produce an adequate voltage to charge the included battery (YES, I PULLED THE TAB).
I am in the sunk cost fallacy zone here .. continue to pay the service fee for the cloud service, purchase solar panels and mounts from a 3rd party that are highly reputed to work for an additional $200, and continue feeding batteries, or cut my losses and just hard-wire some IP cameras with an NVR.
If I would've just spent the $500 I've invested for everything so far, I would have had a much better system.
If you're reading this, and you're considering entering the Blink ecosystem for solar powered cameras ... even at a steep discount ... DON'T!!
UPDATE: Blink reached out to me after my original review with some troubleshooting steps. Eventually I get the cameras to work power up properly. The process is not straight forward and Blink should design these cameras better. Changed from 1 star to 4 because they are now working as expected.
Original review: Ordered two of these cameras. First one worked. Second one never turned on despite being left to charge in the sun for weeks. Got a replacement and the same thing is happening. The solar battery is dead and will not charge. Waste of money.
I really like this unit. I live on the Oregon Coast, it is cloudy and rainy for half the year. My camera stays fully charged and ready to go all the time. Just remember, this unit IS the battery, do not install the battery in the camera itself, the solar panel assembly has a rather large battery inside, remember to install it when unboxing. The solar panel operates the camera and charges the battery during the day, and it runs off of battery power at night. It's a great feature because I can install the camera way up high and away from would be theives.
The only complaint I have is the USB cable from the solar panel to the camera is really tricky to install. It made me cuss on more than one occasion. Other than that, I am truly satisfied.
