Partnering with the European Union to support and strengthen vaccination

The European Union (EU) and WHO/Europe together provide critical assistance to Member States and territories of the WHO European Region on effective vaccination against COVID-19 and in contributing to the longer-term strengthening of routine immunization systems.

Currently, joint programmes are being implemented in the EU’s Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine), the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo*), the central Asian republics (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) and 4 EU Member States (Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Romania). These country programmes within the overarching regional programme pave the way to achieve the goals and targets of the European Immunization Agenda 2030 (EIA2030).

The programmes involve supporting the ministries of health with immunization and supply chain logistics, risk communication and community engagement, and the capacity-building of health-care professionals. This includes support for effective vaccination data collection, the monitoring and evaluation of progress towards EIA2030 targets, and vaccine roll-out safety monitoring, contributing to an overall strengthening of routine immunization systems.
