Amazon Fire TV owners are getting a new streaming channel: YouTube TV.
The new offering shouldn't be confused with the regular YouTube app. YouTube TV is $49.99-a-month subscription service that offers access to live TV and sports across more than 70 channels, including ESPN, TNT, CNN, in addition to the big networks: ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. So it's an option for anyone looking to cut the cord with their cable TV provider.
YouTube TV will arrive on select Fire TV devices, including the second-generation Fire TV stick, Fire TV Stick 4K, and the newest version of the Fire TV Cube, which launches on Oct. 10.
Other supported devices include the first-generation Fire TV Cube and Fire TV Edition Smart TVs from Toshiba, Insignia, Element, and Westinghouse. First-generation Fire TV and Fire TV Stick device owners are out of luck.
Amazon is adding the Google-owned YouTube TV due to customer demand. "We are excited to give Fire TV fans more choice than ever to watch live TV content on Fire TV," said Michael Polin, Fire TV product marketing manager, in today's announcement.
The two companies had previously feuded over carrying each other's products on their respective internet platforms and hardware devices. As a result, Google temporarily decided to pull the standard YouTube app from Amazon's Fire TV and Echo devices. Fortunately for consumers, the two companies made peace on the issue earlier this year; Google made the YouTube app re-available over Fire TV devices while Amazon brought its Prime Video streaming app to Google's Chromecast devices and Android TV.
