Tinder and Spotify Hook Up to Create 'Music Mode'

Marvin Gaye's about to get a lot more streams.

Tinder has added a Music Mode that, courtesy of Spotify, allows users to base their swiping decisions at least partly on musical taste. (Or lack thereof.)

Music Mode builds on the Anthem feature Tinder and Spotify introduced in 2016. Anthem is exactly what you'd expect it to be: A song a Tinder user has decided A) reveals something about them and B) increases their chances of finding a match. It seems to work—Tinder says the 40% of Gen Z users who've enabled Anthems saw a 10% increase in matches afterwards.

Now those Anthems will be combined with the new Explore feature, which is supposed to help Tinder users match on more than just looks, to create Music Mode.

"In Music Mode members will hear a 30-second looped preview of their potential matches’ Anthem while on their profile," Tinder says. "Found in Explore, it’s the first dedicated space on Tinder where you can go specifically to vibe check with potential matches by listening to their preferred beats. It’s like walking into a party and finding out someone else loves the same songs you do."

Tinder says "Music Mode will be rolling out to Tinder members globally, in all markets where Spotify is available, in the coming weeks." To offer some idea of what Tinder users will be listening to when the feature debuts, here's the list of the top five most popular Anthems on the platform in 2021, as provided to PCMag by a company spokesperson:

  1. Way 2 Sexy (with Future & Young Thug) - Drake, Future, Young Thug

  2. Kiss Me More (feat. SZA) - Doja Cat, SZA

  3. good 4 u - Olivia Rodrigo

  4. Heat Waves - Glass Animals

  5. STAY (with Justin Bieber) - The Kid LAROI, Justin Bieber

So. Yeah. Good luck getting the chorus for "good 4 u" out of your head after hearing 30 seconds of it loop over and over again in Music Mode. At least the feature's optional, right?
