The Week in (Windows 8) Tweets

Microsoft's Windows 8 and Surface launched this week. Here are eight tweets that sum up the week.

Microsoft Windows 8 Launch

Today marks the day that Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface tablet go on sale. Somewhat surprisingly, the launch was met with the sort of midnight lines that normally accompany an Apple launch, as eager consumers waited to get their hands on the new hardware and software. (PCMag.com's Windows 8 page is here, and we've provided a review of the Windows Surface RT to boot.)

Naturally, fans and foes of Microsoft's latest products took to Twitter and other social media to comment, praise, and flame the new products. A picture of Windows chief Steven Sinofsky riding the Surface tablet like a skateboard was widely circulated. (What would Apple's Tim Cook use the iPad for, besides a tablet? My guess would be as a serving tray for caviar and champagne.)

So far, "touch" seems to be the watchword for Friday, even though touch screens have obviously been a staple of phones and tablets for years now. Still, even Cook himself started taking shots. "I suppose you could design a car that flies and floats, but I don't think it would do all those things very well," he quipped. (For his part, Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos then spent time comparing the iPad mini and Kindle Fire HD. Are earnings calls on the road to devolving into "yo momma"-style insults? We hope not. Even Netflix spent plenty of time blaming others for its lack of content.)

So, there's a lot of work to be done, yet. We still don't have a good, definitive answer on which convertible Windows 8 hardware to buy, or even if the convertible form factor is the right one. For now, though, we'll stick to the funny. Over the next few pages, we provide the Week in Tweets: The Microsoft Edition.

Just be careful of what you touch. There are laws against certain things.

A small contingent of M$ haters still want to live free or die. How long before a Metro-style interface is mocked up? (Or just mocked.)

Hardy-har-har. A common joke making its way around Twitter.

Anandtech's Anand Lal Shimpi also noted that after using Surface for some time, he felt compelled to try and touch his Chromebook's screen.

Probably less of a tweet than a funny link. In Soviet Russia, Surface touches you.

Well, the Europeans found this funny.

If Microsoft requires Silverlight, and Silverlight isn't on an RT tablet, then how do I know I want to buy the Surface RT?

Some didn't quite buy into the Windows 8 hype.
