Wireless charging removes a cable, but replaces it with a charging base. However, Ikea is set to offer a completely hidden way of recharging your Android or iOS devices by integrating a wireless charger with your furniture.

It's called the SJÖMÄRKE wireless charger, and Ikea describes it as doing a "magic trick" by allowing you to charge your smartphone directly on a tabletop or shelf. This is achieved by mounting the new charger underneath the surface you want to act as the charging location.

As The Verge reports, the charging pad is 7-by-3 inches in size and works through both wood and plastic surfaces up to 22mm (0.87 inches) thick. It requires a minimum distance of 8mm (0.31 inches) to your device. As the video above demonstrates, the charger is mounted using two adhesive strips, but you can supply your own screws for a more permanent fixture that won't fall off and potentially break the charger. Ikea also includes a transparent sticker you can affix above the charger so you know where to place your device on the table or shelf.

It's a clever idea, and one that's sure to be popular with anyone who wants to rid themselves of visible technology around the home. The other key selling point is the price. Ikea only wants $39.99 for the SJÖMÄRKE (that includes a 6-foot power cable and plug), which is set to become available at some point in October. In terms of charging capabilities, it should work like a standard 5W charger and is compatible with Qi 1.2.4.
