1. They're a "guillotine" style cutter (don't panic, you're not cutting off anything relating to Marine Antoinette!) so they can accommodate lots of claw sizes. This is nice if you have more than one size of dog, but also nice if your dog has a few thicker nails, like mine does.
2. They create a really clear "trim line" so you can see exactly where you're cutting and so you don't quick the dog and end up with blood all over.
3. They're sharp, so dogs don't seem to feel them as much, so there's a lot less trying to pull away.
4. I happen to like the grip on these. They're not cushy, but they feel firm in your hand and like a real tool instead of, well, what you've expect at this price point. They're wide enough that I think (although I'm no expert here) that they would be easy to use for someone regardless of hand size.
5. They don't take a ton of effort to use, which is nice if you've got stiff joints or arthritis.
Have I mentioned how INEXPENSIVE these are? Instead of having to pay $20 for one pair, I can keep one at my parents' for when they dogsit, one in our usual dog cabinet, and one in the car in case of a cracked nail while out and about. I can't recommend these highly enough.
As an added bonus, I also find that after awhile when these get dull (or if you, uh, leave them out in the rain like has happened several times to us), they actually make awesome stem clippers for outdoor plants. I've trimmed more than a few crepe myrtle stems and cut many a batch of fresh lilies for the house using a too-dull-to-cut-dog-nails pair of these clippers, so they continue to have a life after their first intended use, which I can appreciate.
Very much recommend these to anyone seeking good quality dog nail clippers that can give a perfect trim while still being super affordable.
I found tons of recommendations for the Millers forge brand of clippers, and even the vet and groomer recommended them. First, let me say that these required almost no effort to clip my dogs nails. I was able to get my dogs nails clipped in 15 minutes, which is the fastest I've ever been able to do this. He didn't once cry out in pain as if I were killing him, nor did he retract his paw as hard as he could from my grasp. I didn't have to do a sharp and quick cut to get these to close, as I have done with many other brands. Instead these just glided right through the nail, and were incredibly precise so that I was able to clip in small sections. It was almost like shaving off his nail just a little bit. Because the clippers clipped of his nail so cleanly I was able to see that the discarded nail anatomy - hard shell and a fleshy inside. The fleshy inside of his nail just crumbles when it falls out of the hard shell, and so I think this is why previous nail clippers were crushing his nail.
Speaking from a physics perspective, I can see these clippers lasting quite a long time and remaining sharp. The design on the blade of the clipper is angled sharply into a thin blade (and it is a very sharp blade). The blades make no noise as they are closed and opened, though I can feel the blades brush against one another. The spring that opens the clippers also makes no noise, and I believe this is because they use a volute spring which I'm also not afraid of getting pinched by.
The only issue with the clippers is that the red comfort grip covers slide off while I clip. This isn't a big deal though as they don't slide off much and it didn't make a difference in how the clippers performed.
For people who are wondering if these are real Millers Forge Inc clippers, they are. Only the larger Miller's Forge nail clippers are made in Italy (specifically the 727C and 767C styled for larger dogs). I would only recommend these for medium to small dogs. All other Miller's forge nail clippers are made in other places -such as Japan and Taiwan. These 743C clipers are made in Taiwan, and do come with the Miller's Forge lifetime guarantee against manufacturing or worksmanship defects unless abused or left to rust (as stated on the back of the packaging).
