In my homeowner and handyman business use, I've probably had more than ten different electronic stud finders. Of all of them, this is by far the easiest to use. It doesn't need to calibrate itself every time you push the button. It just works. You can easily visualize where the studs are. I deducted one star because finding the exact edge of a stud is more difficult because of the way the LEDs are spaced apart. It takes a little moving of the finder to really hone in on an accurate edge location. But that's an unusual scenario. 95% of the time, I just want to make sure the nail or screw hits the stud somewhere near the middle. For that, this can't be beat.

I purchased this stud finder after my previous one was misplaced during a move. I used the ProSensor to tackle projects like hanging pictures, installing shelves, installing a flat screen TV mount, and running wires in walls.

This is, by far, the easiest to use, most accurate, and fastest stud finder I have ever used with standard drywall.

I have used several different stud finders over the year. One of the most common tries to mark the edges of the stud. I found that repeated searches from different directions would not show a consistent location for the edges. I'd put pencil marks where the edges were. The edge locations would vary by +/- 1/2 inch and sometimes more. The big problem with this old method is that I usually didn't care where the EDGE of the stud was, I wanted to locate the CENTER so I would know where to sink my nail, screw, or whatever. It didn't need to be precisely the center, but I didn't want to miss the stud.

The LED display is much easier to read and faster than the old style that marks the edges. This one shows you the width of the stud, so locating the center

Here is my tip on usage: For larger pictures, I like to put two hooks in the wall so that the picture doesn't get bumped crooked as easily. When I am locating studs using the ProSensor, I take a small square of blue painters (masking) tape. I locate the stud using the ProSensor and mark the center of the stud by sticking the tape on the wall. I turn the tape so that the corner points down to make an arrow that points where the center of the stud is. Once I have located two studs, I can use my level to mark exactly where the hooks need to go. Couldn't be easier!

I love the product. Its ability to identify stud location within the wall is outstanding and has made DIY products easy and fun without frustration of having to drill holes and confirm stud locations. More than that, the company stands by their product. 15 months after my purchase, I was using the unit and set my arm down with it in my hand. I lost my grip of it and it fell about 3 feet to the floor. The product no longer functioned after, and I called the company to ask about it and Cass agreed to send a replacement unit out right away.

They stand by their product and their product is as good a quality or better than any I have used in the past. Spend the money and buy this for your home use or professional work and you won’t regret it. Its worth every penny!

Bought this after reading all the fantastic reviews, but found that my experience was much different than most. I've used many stud finders in the past and knew that a solid, reliable, precise stud finder would be a great addition to my tools, but unfortunately, that's not what I found in this Franklin Sensors Stud finder and I had to return it, as I have a few so-so stud finders in my toolbox already.

I found that the depth and precision claims were wholly inaccurate. It would not see through 1/2"-3/4" wainscoting effectively and was mediocre on drywall, only finding studs that you should know already are present (door and window trimmers/ king studs). I was hoping to use it to locate beams through drywall given its wide sensor area - but it was totally useless. I know I asked a lot of it as a stud finder but that was precisely its claim. It may work well in ideal conditions, but so do all stud finders. Performance was so poor and inaccurate, I'm thinking that mine may have actually been defective - that's the only explanation for the other reviews.

Update:
Immediately (within hours) after posting this review I received a phone call from a representative at Franklin Sensors. They indicated that all of their parts are 100% tested, but rarely they do have a defective product in the field. They feel like that may be the situation. They are working out a solution for me and I will update this review again. As for now I've added two stars because of their very quick response to a review on Amazon - very impressive customer service.

2nd Update:
I received a replacement Stud-Finder - It is definitely much better than the first one I received, leading me to be sure that the original was in fact defective. I have used it side by side with your standard run-of-the-mill stud-finders and it outperforms them in all situations. This is a fantastic stud finder, but it still doesn't perform miracles. It still won't see through the thick wainscoting and occasionally gets confused by plaster, but for most drywall applications it's dead on. The string of LEDs are excellent if you need to locate the center of the stud.

An important tip from the manufacturer - If you think you've found a stud, but are getting some extra LEDs or false identifications, move the stud finder vertically up and down the wall to verify the stud location - Also be sure to watch out for fire blocking by turning the unit sideways and checking horizontally. Usually you can figure out what's happening if the first time you put it on the wall something strange happens (like all the LEDs light up).

4 stars for the stud finder itself and 5 stars for fantastic customer service.

There are tons of stud finders to choose from out there, but this sucker pretty much takes all the guess work out. Just pop in a couple AA batteries and away you go. I would upload some pictures but fellow reviewers have already done that for me, so why inundate you with the same thing.

I will say this stud finder is well worth the extra few bucks and will ultimately save you the aggravation that cheaper less accurate ones can cause.

Forget the slide/calibrate type stud finders, this is the one to have period! Got it last night and went over all the walls that are waiting to hang something and found the studs instantly. I was hesitating to start drilling based on the info of my old stud finder because I wasn't confident in the results. Slide from the right you get one location, slide from the left and you get something different. Not with this baby, you place it on the wall and if nothing lights up just move it and you'll find that stud...every time and in the same place. Don't waste your time and money on anything else.

The point of having a stud detector is to find out where the studs in the wall are. You're taking the word of these machines as fact before you start punching holes into your precious walls. With that being said, these are notoriously hard to test. So to test and review this, I first put it up where I knew there was a stud (beside an outlet, where a 1110 box would be mounted directly against the stud). The detector detected 3 LED's worth of space, which is roughly the size of the stud. I then tested it in the storage room which has some open spots where the studs can be seen, due to renovations. I got the same readings. I am going to assume this is accurate, and with that being said, I love it. Good stud detectors are hard to find and there's a lot of risk that comes with punching holes in walls, so having a good one that works as well as this is going to be very handing when doing renovations.

Best one I've used so far. Not perfect, but as the first actually usable unit I've tried, I'm pretty happy. Super simple to use. Apply some pressure against the wall, and make several passes to be certain. Be sure to have good batteries. I balked at the price at first, but took the plunge when It went on sale. Glad I did. How does one set the value of a helpful tool when everything cheaper is garbage? If you NEED a stud finder, this one actually works well- buy it.
