Why design a hand coffee grinder from scratch? - Many hand grinders are difficult to use. We felt like you should enjoy every part of the coffee preperation experience, including the gring. In order to make this happen we spent over a year trying to wrap our heads around every aspect of coffee culture and the grind process. We interviewed hundreds of baristas, cafe owners and individual coffee enthusiasts to find out how we could make an improved version of a manual hand coffee grinder. Our feedback told us that there were 3 main problems with most manual coffee griners.
1) Ease of Use - Most horizontal manual coffee grinders were difficult to use and inconvenient.
2) Consistency - Many grinders struggle to consistently grind beans to a uniform coarseness (particle size).
3) Setup and Tear Down - We were repeatedly told that loading manual coffee grinders and cleaning them after use was negatively affecting their coffee brewing experience.
With this information and a host of peripheral survey data we set out to engineer a new kind of manual grinder. Our goal was to make a hand grinder that was simple and elegant while being surprisingly durable and easy to use. We wanted to create something that avoided the major drawbacks of most manual grinders. With these goals in mind we created the Handground precision manual coffee grinder.
Have your favorite coffee experience with the Handground manual coffee grinder. Whether you enjoy French Press, Pour Over, Cold Brew or regular Drip Coffee, the Handground Manual Coffee Grinder provides you with the ability to precisely grind to your preferred coarseness.
Handground's Easy to Use, Vertical Hand Crank Coffee Mill makes far less noise than electric grinders, which means you can enjoy the freshest ground coffee whithout disturbing precious loved ones or pets who might want to continue sleeping!
Some Important Features → Built-in Adjustable Grind Selector gives you precise control over the coarseness of your grind. → Handy wide-mouth hopper lets you pack your grinder with enough beans for everyone without having to stop and re-load the grinder. → No batteries or electricity are required so you can enjoy fresh ground coffee while traveling or spending time in the great outdoors.
Serious updates → (2018) - re-engineered main drive shaft and burr assembly stiffens the drive assembly and protects against wear and tear.

Manual Made Easy
Handground is the first portable manual coffee grinder with a side mounted handle. Placing the handle on the side allows for a more natural motion and the ability to place your opposite hand on top of the grinder for stabilization. The handle is made from solid aluminum and complimented by a beautiful pakka wood knob.

Consistent Grind Every Time
Running down the center of Handground is a stainless steel axle that drives the burr mill. The axle is mounted on metal bushings in three locations to keep it stable while grinding and eliminate burr wobble. Each axle is milled on a 5 axis CNC that maintains tolerances of 0.004 inches. The combination of added stability and razor thin tolerances allows Handground to achieve a consistent grind, every time.
![Handground's extra wide triton hopper holds 100 grams of beans in 10 gram increments.](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/S/aplus-seller-content-images-us-east-1/ATVPDKIKX0DER/AFEJNPWGMWDDZ/5bb338b5-68a0-44d5-abe5-240821570e76._CR0,326,600,600_PT0_SX300__.jpg)
Lock And Load
The hopper opens extra wide so loading up to 100 grams of coffee is a breeze. The top locks on with a quarter twist to prevent beans from flying out while grinding. If there isn't a scale available, each measurement mark on the side of the hopper represents ~10 grams of beans.
![Handgrounds manual selector has 15 settings to grind every type of coffee from espresso to cold brew](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/S/aplus-seller-content-images-us-east-1/ATVPDKIKX0DER/AFEJNPWGMWDDZ/780a0b6b-7585-413e-a5f9-51766689fb47._CR59,0,383,383_PT0_SX300__.jpg)
Grind For Any Brew
We drew inspiration from the focus ring on a camera lens so selecting the right grind size is simple. Twist the numbered ring to setting 1 to produce an espresso grind or 8 for French Press. There is a step in between each number for a total of 15 coarseness settings.
![Handground's 40mm conical ceramic burr mill crushes coffee for consistent particle size.](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/S/aplus-seller-content-images-us-east-1/ATVPDKIKX0DER/AFEJNPWGMWDDZ/16cf601c-365a-41dd-95bc-2943070ce675._CR0,0,300,300_PT0_SX300__.png)
Balanced Speed & Effort
At the heart of Handground is a 40mm conical ceramic burr mill that crushes coffee beans into an even particle size. The geometry of the burr is fine tuned to balance the speed which it grinds and the torque required to turn the handle. The result is that grinding takes just the right amount of effort in the right amount of time.

Efficiency and easy to use!
Takes 20 seconds to grind beans for 2 cups of coffee, vs 90-120 seconds with the others (except the electric grinder).
Quality and quickly convertible-
Very uniform grounds, settings are very easy to see and change coarseness.
This morning I ground coffee for co-workers to use my French Press, Aeropress and Pour over coffee methods and it took 4-5 seconds to make the adjustment (including me checking the chart). you don't have to take the end piece off, count clicks or reset something back to the tightest point and then count the clicks to adjust it and test and then adjust...) you get the idea.
Heavy and easy to crank, different coworkers of all abilities could use it with minimal effort and it was very efficient despite it being their first time trying to use a manual grinder.
Holds 100grams of beans! I thought I'd save time and use the measurement markers as a way of only grinding 10 grams per cup and use it as my measuring indicator. However, given how the beans settle unevenly, this is highly inaccurate so I just scoop in the beans I want to use and then grind until empty. Much easier to see how much I'm using this way. But if you were grinding to make an large pot or 4-6 cups at a time... you'd have plenty of room to pour all your beans in and the base should hold 40-60 grams of coffee if I'm guessing. maybe more. I've only ground 40 at once and it had room for more when I unscrewed it.
The base unscrews very easily to pour into any apparatus you like, even your Aeropress without using the funnel. The sticky surface on the bottom of the base appears to be a huge help in keeping the unit from moving when you're pressing on your tabletop. The top unscrews very easily to (clockwise to open!) so adding beans and re-sealing is very quick. Also the opening is HUGE so you don't have to gingerly funnel the beans into the hopper like with smaller grinders. The Burr's are also HUGE, hence the easy and efficiency of grinding.
I like researching and testing things out heavily before weighing in and passing judgement on things so I want to say buying this used for $60 was a huge investment financially for me and one I didn't take lightly. It's without a doubt my favorite purchase of 2017!
I'll update if it ever causes any issues, but after nearly 1lb of beans I see no reason this shouldn't last a lifetime.
I got into pour overs after a friend sold me his old electric burr grinder and recommended a kit. They were already an improvement, but I noticed that I had to go to the finest setting to get a decent grind—time for a new grinder. I researched and saw the Handground was well rated, but more expensive than I was looking for, so I went with the next best hand grinder. It turns out that, that one was no better than my old electric, and was a pain to keep steady on the counter.
Here's how I know the Handground is better: I'm using the same batch of blue bottle coffee as with the previous grinder. I'm using the same pour-over filter and method as before. Since I tried this grinder second, the coffee is even a few days older than with the previous grinder. I've even tried going up and down in quantity, notching the grind down a little … with every variation it's just a better cup of coffee.
To my eye, the grounds look about the same: I see some boulders in the mix, as with other grinders. But the taste is a different world! My hypothesis is that there are more consistent granule sizes on the smaller end … fewer "fines," so to speak. Whatever alchemy is happening here, it has resulted in pure gold.
I also find the grinding to be easier and more fun. The vertical cranking is much easier on the shoulders; the sticky base removes all sliding, and the broad top allows for a stable grip to remove almost all wobble. Even the feeling and sound of the grind is a little nicer, almost a "slicing" sound rather than "crushing."
Finally, the grinder is larger than I expected, giving it a substantial look and feel. Its overall footprint is smaller than my old grinders, but it has more presence. It's also a lot prettier than other grinders … something I don't mind leaving on the counter.
In case you're wondering, I use a couple different drippers and would recommend either. Here's what I recommend:
- It has a thermometer!
- It has a timer!
- Great for beginners!
- You need these for the Kalita Wave:
- Keep your coffee fresh!
- Brush it off!
