NHL style power rankings: Connor Bedard, Auston Matthews, David Pastrňák and more

As The Athletic’s NHL style power rankings return for one final check-in before the end of the 2023 calendar year, we need to take stock of how refreshing it is to see NHLers showing off classy, striking and fun outfits before entering games.

Yes, the bar is still low compared to their NFL and NBA compatriots in the eyes of some. But it’s been a breath of fresh air compared to what players would’ve worn even as early as five years ago.

We’ve reached a point where young players like Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli are putting effort into their day-to-day drip. We see you.

The older, savvier veterans like Matt Duchene, who we profiled in our previous ranking, also are delivering.

So, here’s to a great 2024 with more zany, colorful and eccentric outfits from these NHLers. It makes our jobs ranking them all the more fun.

With this week’s rankings, you may notice a holiday theme among some of our entrants. ‘Tis the season, after all.

10

Matt Duchene

Dallas Stars

Powers : Duchene remains a style rankings favorite. I believe this is his third appearance already. He obviously has some taste, but he's also fun and creative. The red socks, pocket square and tie blend in nicely, too.

McKenzie : The dark-green suit would be super dope even without the musical notes. But with the notes, it still looks spiffy and unique. At first glance, when observing the suit and the red tie, you'd think Duchene's vibe was holiday-festive. So, if Duchene was somehow in a pinch during the holidays, he could easily pull off this outfit at a party. Duchene continues to surprise me with his style.

McKenzie : This goes down as one of the best black-and-white ensembles I've seen from an NHL player this year. The dark suit matched with the white shirt and patterned black tie worked well for me. To top it off, a black Supreme beanie/tuque. It's such a badass outfit.

Powers : The black slim-fitting suit is so clean, and I like how he's given it some character with a tie that has a design and the Supreme beanie. I've never been much into Supreme, but I respect the brand and think the hat is a nice touch here.

Connor Bedard

Powers : It's funny, someone responded to the Blackhawks posting this image on social media that Bedard finally found some socks. People are watching anything and everything he does, including what he wears. Just from covering him this season, I've learned he's pretty reserved off the ice, but you can tell he cares about his clothes. In this look, the colors work well together, and I'm fine with the tieless approach here.

McKenzie : We need to give props to whoever takes these photos of Bedard just as much as whoever is his stylist. If this keeps up, those photos could start to match the on-ice highlights in material. The red, patterned suit works well. The black belt and shoes are always in style (and should be the norm). Another good fit from the No. 1 draft pick.

Quinton Byfield

Los Angeles Kings

McKenzie : This Byfield look just missed the cut for our last style rankings by about a day. Scott and I made a point to include it for this edition. Byfield's all-white coat and hat ensemble, mixed with the black shirt underneath, is closely on-brand considering his team's color scheme. The sunglasses and backpack also are a nice touch.

Powers : We hadn't chosen Byfield yet, but he's had a couple looks that were real close. I don't think just anyone could pull off this white double-breasted suit with a white beanie, but Byfield does to perfection. He carries an L.A. vibe with him.

Filip Forsberg

McKenzie : I cannot confirm if this outfit was worn with the intention of celebrating the holidays, but Forsberg's red suit works perfectly for this time of year. His mustache and smile make this photo light up. The matching red shoes are quite nice, but red loafers might have led to a higher ranking on our list.

Powers : I spent way too much time trying to figure out exactly what those shoes were. I agree that a loafer might have worked better, but I appreciate the out-of-the-box effort. The suit is class, though. The tie helps accentuate it, too.

Dylan Larkin

Luke Schmidt / NHL LSC

McKenzie : This suit screams power and luxury. The black, striped suit and white shirt are crisp. The black leather shoes work perfectly. The matching handbag also adds to the presence. It's a damn good one from Larkin.

Powers : The pinstriped suit is a reliable winner. I agree that the shoes and bag add to it, as well. It's just a great look from Detroit's captain.

Auston Matthews

Toronto Maple Leafs

McKenzie : I get that the Ryan Reynolds ugly sweater meme is a few years old, but I love still seeing people, including NHLers, commit to the bit. Matthews got the sweater down with a nice white tuque. Also, I LOVE him wearing the Nike Dunks Low SE Malachite Greens. I advocated for this one to make our list.

Powers : Julian definitely had more love for this look than I did. Still, I respect the commitment to the Christmas sweater by Matthews. He's another one who has shown up in our rankings with different looks. You know I'm all about those Nikes, too.

Martin Nečas

Powers : Nečas had a few different looks that we considered this week. The man definitely has style. I'm a little torn on whether or not the sneakers work here, but he's earned the benefit of my doubt at this point. It's another good-looking suit from his deep wardrobe.

McKenzie : I don't know how Nečas keeps pulling off these outfits under our noses. He just finds a way to rock a suit combined with Nike Dunks so effortlessly. All he's missing is for his watch to be much more prominent in this shot.

Yanni Gourde

Seattle Kraken

McKenzie : I love this Santa outfit from Gourde. He didn't even need a Christmas hat to make it better. The best part of the suit? The fur lapels. (I presume it's faux fur and not real fur.)

Powers : There were a handful of players who did Christmas well. Gourde was one of the best. The details of the Santa suit are superb.

David Pastrňák

McKenzie : True story: Scott and I were ready to rank a Pastrňák outfit where it seemed he was doing some kind of homage to Cruella de Vil with the black-and-white mix. Instead, the "Santa Baby" crew neck alongside the Balenciaga Triple S Clear Sole sneakers won. Originally, I didn't expect for it to beat Gourde's Santa outfit ... but it did! This is a hilarious and stylish entry all at once.

Powers : Gourde may have been robbed ... on second thought ... props to Pastrňák for matching this great outfit from top to bottom. It's playful for Christmas, but it's also got some class to it. I don't mess with Balenciaga sneakers myself. They're sort of outside the traditional sneaker culture (it might be different if I had the money). This feels like a look that might be divisive. Curious to read the comments on this one.
