For most mid-sized Importers, this is what an import process looks like from a corporate perspective: IMPORT PROCESS 1) Issue PO (via ERP) to overseas vendor Hibernate (6-50 weeks) 2) Receive goods into warehouse. End. This is the MOST common mode. (If this isn't you, you are in the minority.) I say from a 'corporate perspective', because the ERP is the way companies see the world. It is the system of record for the company...specifically the financial record for the company. The problem is that the ERP is largely derivative. It is derivative to just about everything that actually happens. You see, it is a unidimensional view of what is happening...and that one dimension is financial. While it is nice to know where one stands financially, the financial viewpoint is derivative to the operations that is actually going on. And there is a lot going on. Looking back at the Import process, once an order is placed with the vendor, the vendor will start making the goods. At some point, the goods will be ready to ship. The goods will be put in a container, that container will be picked up, dropped at a port, put on a container vessel, sail across the high seas, arrive at a port, offloaded, traverse the port, get picked up by a drayman, and then delivered to a warehouse. The container might sit for a few days, and then make the final voyage across the yard to a door, where it will be emptied, inventories, and acknowledged by the ERP in a warehouse receipt. None of this is managed by the ERP. In fact, the ERP has no inkling of knowledge that anything is happening, and so none of this can be managed from a corporate perspective. Managing this from a Transportation or Trade Compliance perspective is not the same as managing from a corporate perspective.
