"Managers can be coaches, and they should be, even in construction. No, especially in construction. "We tend to think construction is primarily a technical industry, but it is not. It is a people industry, and I say that as a chartered civil engineer. Good results in construction derive from good relationships, not from calculations, plans or action." Chartered civil engineer and professional certified coach Dave Stitt makes the case for a coaching style of management in #construction #buildingthefuture

Embracing the Excitement and Challenges of Construction Leadership at a Young Age 🔨🌟 As a Managing Director in the dynamic world of construction, I often find myself reflecting on the journey that brought me here. Being a young professional in this industry comes with its own set of unique experiences – ones that are both thrilling and challenging. Every day presents a new opportunity to make a tangible impact, whether it's overseeing the development of innovative structures or leading a team towards a shared vision. The fast-paced nature of construction keeps me on my toes, and I thrive in the midst of its constant evolution. Despite the challenges that inevitably arise, there's an undeniable sense of fulfillment in seeing a project come to life from concept to completion. From managing budgets and timelines to fostering a culture of collaboration, every aspect of my role as a Managing Director pushes me to grow and adapt. But perhaps what I cherish most about being a young leader in construction is the chance to inspire others. By demonstrating passion, resilience, and a commitment to excellence, I hope to pave the way for the next generation of industry trailblazers. So, to all the young professionals out there considering a career in construction, I say this: Embrace the journey. Yes, it will be challenging, but it will also be incredibly rewarding. 🏗 Business & Executive Coaching + Leadership Development for Construction Executives. Serving Commercial Construction Companies doing $10M to $1B+ in Revenue
Think size matters? Think again. Navigating the construction industry for years, I've noticed a common pitfall: many contractors equate increasing revenue with success. This mindset misses a crucial point: high revenue doesn't always spell high profitability. In my experience, the true difference between merely generating revenue and achieving actual profitability is a focus on people. It's not merely a numbers game; it involves effective leadership that: ▶️ Builds high-performing teams, that stick together, even when the owner, the drawings, and the weather suck. ▶️ Holds everyone, from those with hard hands and dirty boots, to those with soft hands and shiny shoes, accountable. ▶️ Guides teams towards agreement (not consensus) on resolving complex project issues ▶️ Has tough conversations, without ruining relationships Remember, building a successful construction business isn't just about the top line; it's about securing bottom line victories. And that begins with your team. Are you ready to shift your focus from mere revenue to sustainable profitability? That's why I wrote Construction Genius: The One Book Every Construction Leader MUST Read Drawing from nearly two decades of experience working with construction leaders, I've compiled this book to address the people issues that are eroding your profits. Are internal conflicts, lack of accountability, or underperforming teams holding you back? It's time to elevate your leadership. "Construction Genius" offers a practical, actionable roadmap to turn these challenges into opportunities, not just in theory but in practice. No matter your size, from $10 million subcontractors to billion-dollar general contractors, "Construction Genius" is your guide to converting top line revenue into real, lasting profit. If you want to be successful in your construction career there are many things you can focus on but here are my five keys to success that I try to live by: 1. Communicate clearly and effectively. For everyone involved, I think that it’s critical that we communicate clearly, effectively, and always make sure we keep the team informed, and aware of what is going on, and when. 2. Be proactive. Understand what needs to be done, implement a plan to get it done, and stay ahead of it to ensure it gets done successfully. Don't get caught being reactive. 3. Manage expectations. For me this is huge. Managing expectations for Subcontractors, Superintendents, and most importantly, our Clients. Make sure everyone is aware of what is expected and do your best to minimize surprises. 4. Be flexible. I believe that there is no one size fits all solution to what we do in construction therefore we need to be flexible in our approach to the way we manage things. Quit seeking perfection and learn how to be comfortable being uncomfortable. 5. Lead by example. Lead with integrity, do the right thing, and treat others with respect. Set the bar high and show others how much you care and spread your passion throughout. For me these aren't just keys to success, they are rules to live by. Not only can they be applied to our professional lives but our personal lives as well. If you are looking to make some improvements in your life take this into consideration and focus your efforts accordingly. Do you have additional advice to offer? If so, please add it to the comments below for others to benefit. Follow me and together let’s find ways to achieve more success. Innovate. Adapt. Overcome. #construction #leadership #success

Meet the founder and owner of Well Works, Amy Powell: Who am I? I have worked in the construction industry for almost 19 years now. I was a PM for a GC and then acquired the role and responsibility to create and conduct training. I failed. It was no one's fault but my own, but I failed. I was a PM by trade (not a trainer). In the words of Mavrick, "It's not what I am. It's who I am. How do I teach that?" So I worked my butt off to earn a Master's degree in Adult Education and Training to figure out how to be more effective at transferring information to our industry members (all of them...including our field and trades), who wanted and needed these skills and information. This is how the WWLDP came into existence. The Well Works Leadership Development Program (#WWLDP) took longer to design and build than most of my past building projects. But, just like our construction projects, a quality control process was implemented before it was shared with the industry; A group of experienced construction field leaders dubbed the "The Pioneer Crew" went through the entirety of the program and provided candid and critical feedback, suggestions, adjustments, corrections and perspectives to be added to the final product before release. While another new and exciting program is currently in design, the WWLDP is offered now. It focuses mainly on Emotional Intelligence and "soft" skills (better described as essential skills). It is strategically built and optimized to reach our field employees (Trades, Supers, Carpenters, Foreman, etc.). It is infused with neuroscience, social psychology, and cognitive learning tools but translated and delivered in a way that we can access, relate to, absorb, and utilize the content best within the industry. If you work in the construction industry, you are a perfect fit to join the crew!
