Business and conversational English trainer. Works internationally, supporting multilingual professionals to develop their written and spoken English. #Podcaster who is passionate about language learning.
Language practise tip - leave a comment somewhere There's something that can make you feel quite vulnerable when you start to write comments in another language in public forums. What if it's not right? What if one of the words isn't correct? What if people misunderstand? What if your friends or colleagues see it? The truth is that most of them probably won't! Think of all the content that is posted on social media. Do you read all of the comments on all of the posts in all of your social media feeds? The idea here is that it's something quick that you can do in a couple of minutes. It might help you to leave your comfort zone and try something new. So if you decide to leave a quote on LinkedIn or Facebook/to reply to a tweet/to post a comment on a blog article or video, here are some things to think about. 1. Add value - nobody likes comments that don't actually say something useful. 2. Limit the time you spend on it - don't rewrite it 10 times to try and make the perfect sentence and then never send it (yes, I have done that) 🤦♀️ 3. Start small, especially if it's something that you don't often do. 4. Don't write an essay - just to be absolutely sure that you got your point across. 5. Don't use a translation site and post whatever it churns out - they can produce some odd sentences and often they introduce mistakes that you, as a learner, wouldn't have made. This is about practising your language skills! If this is something that you haven't done before and you decide to do it, how did you feel afterwards? If you don’t often reply in English, you can also start here on this post! If it’s something that you do regularly, do you have any other tips to share ? Most of us want to get things right, but generally people are more interested in what you have to say than whether every single word is 100% perfect! #LanguageTip #LearningByDoing #ProfessionalEnglish #BusinessEnglish #LanguageSkills

How to Speak English Spontaneously Non-native English speakers are turning out nearly flawless writing by using AI. This frees them from learning the intricacies of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. However, the reveal comes when the same writers engage in English conversation on the fly. At that point, comprehending and responding to English becomes a challenge. It takes extra effort, but total immersion is the way to become a fluent speaker. I recommend listening to CBC Radio because many shows consist of interviews. Anything you watch on TV is useful if you listen with English subtitles or (better still) without subtitles. Of course, total immersion also includes re-setting your computer and cell phone to English. Participating in a recreational activity where only English is spoken is both fun and effective. Look for an activity where the instructions are spoken in English. For example, if you like to dance, take a class from your city’s recreation department. If you like to read, join a public library book club, even if it is hard for you when you start. Focus on learning and speaking phrases, not individual words. Even if you speak English at work, become more confident by joining small-group English classes run by a professional teacher. If you have the funds, hiring a professionally certified English teacher gives you the greatest assurance that you will hear correct English and receive accurate feedback. If a teacher has lived for a long time (or their whole life) in the country of your target language, you'll also gain insights about culture, holidays and places to visit. Accept making mistakes. It is better to make mistakes than translate in your head. If you keep translating in your head, you will never speak fluently. Expect some award moments when communication breaks down. Tell yourself, “It’s okay.” If someone doesn’t understand you, you can work out the meaning by substituting words you do know. Talk to yourself in English. Go through your day having a silent conversation about your daily activities in English. When you are alone, speak aloud. After a while, it will be natural to use some English phrases. So, although AI makes writing easier, use all the strategies you can to become a spontaneous speaker.
