Today is World Soil Day. Founded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, it marks an incredibly important day on the calendar and exists to raise awareness of the importance of the link between healthy soil and water management, in support of global sustainable agri-food systems. Rain fed agriculture systems account for 80 percent of croplands, contributing to 60 percent of the global food production, whilst irrigated agriculture systems withdraw 70% of the world's freshwater and account for 20 percent of croplands. The scale of global soil/water management, and the challenges brought about by climate change are vast, however IoT and other supporting Bio-technologies are helping to give farmers the tools to succeed through the advantages of connected systems.
