“The completion of Essentia's Vision Northland project is indeed a transformative milestone for Duluth. This monumental investment has not only reshaped our skyline but also redefined our potential as a region. It's a pivotal ‘before-and-after’ moment in our city's narrative, marking a new chapter in our growth and development. “With the establishment of the state-of-the-art St. Mary’s Medical Center, we have solidified our position as the premier health care destination in northern Minnesota. This is a significant achievement that will have far-reaching implications for our community's health and well-being. But the impact of this project extends beyond health care. It positions Duluth as a prime location for living and working, making us a competitive contender in the broader Minnesota landscape. “The true value of this investment lies in the opportunities it presents for the future. This is not just a one-time infusion of capital into our city. It's a catalyst for sustained growth and development. It's a chance to shape the Duluth of tomorrow, to create a city that reflects our aspirations and values. “We must seize this opportunity to leverage the Vision Northland project for additional economic development. The project can stimulate further investment in our city, expanding our tax base, and fueling economic growth. It can attract businesses and entrepreneurs, creating jobs and opportunities for our residents. “The project also presents an opportunity to address some of our city's most pressing challenges. It can spur the development of new housing, helping to alleviate our housing shortage and making our city more affordable for residents. It can lead to improvements in our urban core, enhancing the quality of life for our residents and making our city more attractive to visitors and potential residents. “Moreover, the project can contribute to our community's health in a broader sense. By promoting a holistic approach to health care, it can improve overall well-being and reduce health disparities in our community. It can also provide new opportunities for education and research, fostering innovation and learning in our city. “The Vision Northland project is more than just a new building in our city's skyline. It's a beacon of opportunity, a catalyst for change, and a testament to our city's potential. As we move forward, we must ensure that we capitalize on this opportunity, using it to create a brighter, healthier, and more prosperous future for all of Duluth's residents. We are so very grateful to President and CEO Dr. David Herman and the entire leadership team at Essentia for choosing and investing in Duluth and our community.” — Matthew Baumgartner, MBA Baumgartner, president of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce , in an exclusive statement to the Duluth News Tribune Tribune Opinion page https://lnkd.in/gJGzMm7Z

Architect | Founder of Beyond Access | Accessible Design Specialist | PhD Researcher | Third Sector Board Director + Chairperson.
Fantastic to see this topic gaining traction, thank you for the article Clare Delmar, and for reposting Will Hurst. The real gem would be to provide facilities showcasing the best possible practice of accessible design - not just design for design sake and chucking Doc M packs into tiny boxes behind reinforced steel doors (as is so often the case with public facilities in the uk). Remember Doc M is a minimum criteria, not the standard to be aspired to. 📐 Also important is considering age and dementia design principles, designing for neurodivergence, and providing inclusive Changing Places. A toilet is so much more than just a toilet.
Thank you Clare Delmar for continuing to champion the fight for a better provision of public toilets (see article below in Architects’ Journal). I completely agree that this is key part of making cities like London more accessible and equitable, and we plan to raise this issue again as part of The London Society's mission to connect the right people and therefore support improvements to the capital. We can't do this alone, so if you have a project or some research or you just care about the subject, feel free to contact me directly. We need to start a movement!!!

Happy Friday! I’m pleased to share that the latest issue of LABM is out now in print and digital format. Here’s a snapshot of what you’ll find inside the March/April edition: 🏘 Missed opportunity to fix the housing crisis — Matthew Warburton, Policy Advisor at the Association of Retained Council Housing, discusses the Spring Budget. ➡ Retrofit Skills Challenge: With demand for qualified retrofitters continuing to boom, this issue, Jenny Pierpoint, Chief Operating Officer at The Retrofit Academy CIC, explains how local authorities and housing associations can address their skills gaps. ➡ In our Show Preview, we share details of the agenda and speaker line-up for FOOTPRINT+ London in May. Fernanda Clemente Pinto 🏘 In our Special Report feature, Gary Haynes, Managing Director of Voicescape, a software business providing resident engagement solutions for social landlords and local authorities — considers how technology could hold the key to no-access. 🏘 Jonathan Ducker, Head of Regulatory Affairs at Kingspan Insulation, considers how social housing providers can insulate residents living in ‘hard to treat’ properties from fuel poverty, by ensuring existing homes retain heat effectively, and offers advice on installing internal wall insulation. 🏘 Offsite construction in the UK is so much more than post-war prefab and struggling MMC housebuilders. But the sector’s many successes struggle to get their story told. Adam Salt, Business Development Manager for A.Proctor Group Ltd., looks at the bigger picture and explains why it’s important to make sure the positives don’t get forgotten when we think about modular and offsite. Also inside this issue: Plus we also feature articles from AKW Medi-Care Ltd, Algeco UK, Aliva UK, Clyde Radiators, Marley, Mira Showers and Novus Property Solutions, covering an array of subjects from creating wheelchair accessible kitchens, innovative offsite design platforms, external wall insulation, LST radiators, single source strategy approaches to solar PV specification, maximising inclusivity in bathrooms and advice on tackling healthcare’s theatre space issue head on. In addition to all the latest news, events, project updates, industry opinion and construction products. Thanks to all our editorial contributors and advertisers for your support. I hope you enjoy the issue! We know that the environments we shape, shape us in return, and that planning can prevent more disease than the NHS can ever treat. It is time to fully embrace the opportunities, all projects can contribute in improving health; prevent, delay and reduce the need for reactive health and social care, and improve, enhance and build resilience in health care. It is great to see an increasing health through planning call to arms.
Where we live and the physical surroundings we interact with in our daily lives are a fundamental determinant of health. Today, our Policy Lead for Healthy Places, Matthew Ashton will be speaking at the Healthy City International Design International Congress about the approach being taken in Liverpool to ensure that health and wellbeing is placed at the heart of planning in the city. To coincide with the congress, we have published our new policy position statement on the built environment. https://lnkd.in/e-QA5pnD

We are proud to announce our collaboration with TRUUD (Tackling Root causes upstream of Unhealthy Urban Development), a research project driven by some of the UK’s leading academics, to support their pioneering research into the how urban centres can be developed to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities. Federated Hermes Real Estate will provide researchers with access to two of our placemaking projects, St Mary le Port, Bristol, and Paradise Birmingham, to examine how evaluation of health outcomes can aid investment decision-making. Chris Taylor, Head of Real Estate comments: “Our long track record in placemaking and urban regeneration has shown us that the built environment has huge potential to create more meaningful cities, providing citizens with a sense of belonging and relevance as well as addressing health and wellbeing issues. We look forward to integrating TRUUD’s findings into our investment decision-making process to drive greater health equality in the societies in which we operate.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e-6GPf29 #placemaking #regeneration #urbanhealth

Our #research focuses on the #builtenvironment, but considers a broader set of drivers, trends and #innovations that could support more efficient, effective and #inclusive healthcare systems. New approaches to healthcare will seek to achieve health by or through #design, with a greater emphasis on #mentalhealth and #wellbeing, a balance of physical and #digitalsolutions and better understanding of the role of #green #urban #spaces. Better-designed #buildings, spaces and #places can improve resident #health and wellbeing and overall #qualityoflife.
