Transitioning to Payments Product Management! While the transition involves building domain understanding, networking and gaining practical experience, one of the commonly overlooked area is not spending enough time to ‘craft your narrative’. Crafting your narrative is about creating a compelling story that ties your past experiences, current skills, and future goals together in a way that demonstrates why you're a great fit for a Payments Product Manager role. It's about presenting your journey in a coherent and engaging way. Here is a personal example from a long time back - Software Engineer transitioning to Payments Product Manager I've always been fascinated by the way money moves around the globe, and how technology makes that process smoother, faster, and more secure. As a software engineer working on Deutsche Bank transaction banking products, I worked closely with product team to build and enhance financial applications, making them more user-friendly and efficient. During this time, I also took the initiative to learn about Agile methodologies, UX design, data analysis, along with reading books 📚 and courses on Product Management. I believe it is logical for me to transition into a Payments Product Manager role where I can combine my technical background, my knowledge of payment products, and understanding of product management to create innovative payment solutions that meet customers' needs and drive business goals. Note that when crafting your own narrative, think about what initially attracted you to the payments industry and product management, how your past experiences (even if not directly related) equip you for this new role, and why you're excited about this future direction. This will help create a story that is not only compelling but also deeply authentic.
