Hello! I have a favor to ask. As most of you know, I have been on the Army crawl Ph.D. plan for several years now, approximately 90% complete. In a competitive labor market, recruiting and retaining employees can be incredibly difficult. One of the best ways to attract new employees and keep them around is to offer professional development opportunities. Research shows that 91% of high performing employees feel that working for a company that offers learning and development opportunities was important to them. Especially in a small business environment, when a career path and promotion possibilities may not be as clear or as plentiful, finding ways to develop your employees is vital.

Acknowledgment/Attention. When your employees achieve something they have achieved something. The recognition given can be in the form of an award for that achievement. Employees will always be enthusiastic and work, so that their performance can be optimal. One-on-One Coaching. Fostering employee development through coaching. You must have time to do coaching so that your employees know their strengths and weaknesses. Coaching is very useful for improving your employee's performance. Career Path. Your employees need to know what the potential future holds for them, what opportunities are offered to them to increase their performance growth. Set career paths within your organization. Do you promote talented and accomplished employees from within the company? Every superior must be observant in seeing this situation. But when you have difficulty finding employees who excel within your company's internal environment, another thing that must be done is that you must find a solution by looking for talented employees from outside your company.

This is going to be a “hot take” but we need to promote people in organizations who do things and get things done not people who know people. I’ve watched people who make less than me move above my pay grade and it makes me question what characteristics companies find valuable in employees. Maybe it’s my inability to not let the little things go? Maybe it’s my inability to find any area needing improvement and try to improve it ? Maybe it’s my neatness, organization and time management skills? Regardless, I hope companies realize that the individuals doing the work actually want you to succeed, but by promoting others shows you don’t want them to.
