Intertwine

- [Instructor] Intertwine is an interesting construction drawing tool allowing you to create overlaps between objects using masks, but without you actually building the masks. It was introduced in illustrated 2023, and has had a couple of refinements throughout the year, so it's got a lot more going on really inside of the way it actually works in this particular version of Illustrator. So I've got these two things just here, these two serpents like so, and actually interestingly you'll notice that when I move that you can see that the object is moving but not the pattern. And while we are here, we might as well take a look at that. To do so, we can go to the transform panel and open the full panel up like so. Then go to its flyout and you can see here that it's set to transform object only. You could say transform pattern only. We'll be doing that in the chapter on patterns, and transform both. And you'll see when I move this now both move together. So do watch out for that if that's going to affect your work. Okay, so I'm going to select both serpents just now and then I'm going to go to the object menu and choose Intertwine and Make. And there are a couple of ways you can do this. You can drag around with this lasso, which is the way that you could do it before. You could also hold down shift to create a marquee. But now you don't need to do that at all. What you can do is just go over a sector like so, this is a little bit live painting just here, but if you go over that and click, you can see it works that out for you. I'm just going to go here and click and so an over, so this one's an under like so, and there we are. You can see very quickly we've created this intertwine. Now if you want to release it, it's back to the menu just here or indeed edit it later on, okay, you can just go ahead and go to Intertwine and then choose Release or Edit from here. And that takes you back to the tool, so you can click again to go backwards or move down through the stacking order if there's more than two objects. The only other thing to mention with intertwines is when you get to the chapter on appearances, intertwines are not appearance friendly, and they will be expanded, so you won't be able to edit them if you use some more appearances on top of the intertwine itself. And there you go. Otherwise, great feature.
