Cognitive technologies in business

- Hi, I'm David Schatsky, senior manager at Deloitte LLP. I'm here in Rashid Auditorium at Carnegie Mellon University, a leader in artificial intelligence research, to introduce our course, Cognitive Technologies: The Real Opportunities for Business. This course provides an overview of artificial intelligence technologies, also known as cognitive technologies, and their impact on organizations. The course is aimed at a general audience, professionals in any organization that uses information technology, which is pretty much any organization in the private, public, or non-profit sectors. Students may also be interested in this course, because it provides a broad overview of the applications and business implications of artificial intelligence. Some of these lectures cover in six or seven minutes what a computer science undergrad might study for an entire semester or more. This course focuses more on what and why and less on how. The course consists of 26 mini-lectures that are about five or six minutes long, on average. The lectures are grouped into modules that share common themes, such as learning, perception, or applications. Altogether, there's about two-and-half hours of video content in the course. Each lecture will be accompanied by a short quiz to reinforce the key concepts, and each module has an assessment to measure your mastery of the material. After completing this course, you should be able to identify some of the most important cognitive technologies and recognize what they do, and at a high level, how they work. You should also be able to discuss what kinds of applications each technology may be suited for, discuss an approach for evaluating whether and where to implement cognitive technologies in an organization, share a viewpoint on the impact of these technologies on workers and the design of work, and play a valuable role in planning your organization's approach to the use of cognitive technologies. Let's get started.
