Senior Designer

ProbablyMonsters Texas, United States
No longer accepting applications

THE ROLE:

ProbablyMonsters is looking for a Senior Designer to become part of the core development team for an unannounced studio located in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX.

You will join a team that believes:

  • Leadership is demonstrated by empowering and guiding employees to reach their full potential while working towards a clear goal.
  • Making games is a team sport best done through planning, iteration, and collaboration.
  • Predictability and creativity are not mutually exclusive.
  • Providing opportunities to the next generation of developers is critical to the long-term health of the studio and the industry in general.

This role will be the adventure of your career. You will become part of the core development team that will build not just a brand-new game but also help define the culture of a new studio. You will be responsible for spearheading the conceptualization, prototyping, and implementation of key gameplay mechanics and mentoring and training a new generation of designers. This position will be equal parts managing a small team of designers and executing designs, but your priority will always be supporting the designers who report to you.

Location(s) and Travel:

We are a Hybrid Studio. We believe that the office and home have their place in today’s work environment. Employees must be able to access the office located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There will be a minimal amount of travel in this role. (Less than 10%)

WHO YOU ARE:

  • You have experience shipping games as a tech, systems, or gameplay designer. You have opinions on what works and what does not based on years of experience and have drawn positive conclusions from success and failure alike.
  • You relish prototyping, but understand when it is time to enter production, and know the difference between the two.
  • You are passionate about training and mentoring designers, regardless of how novice or seasoned they are.
  • You are open-minded and enjoy being challenged with what you might consider good enough. You believe the “gold standard” is just a temporary example until something better comes along, and a better solution can come from anyone, at any time, and not just your design team.
  • You are relentless in your pursuit of making fun, creative game experiences for everyone who plays your games, but you will temper it with realistic expectations of work-life balance as a role model to those who will look up to the example you set.
  • You are an excellent communicator capable of receiving and providing feedback professionally. You understand the power of your words and use them to hold yourself and everyone else accountable, while doing it in a respectful way.
  • You have an insatiable curiosity. You understand that learning is a life-long process and are open to understanding new perspectives and ways to develop games.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Work with the engineering team to help define technical pipelines and design best practices.
  • Help prototype the game's early version and set up a foundational pipeline for the entire team.
  • Work with the studio’s design director to help define the core gameplay loop and game system implementation specifics.
  • Write gameplay design documents as needed and work alongside peers in other departments to see your designs implemented into the game.
  • Take an active role in building our design department, mentoring our new hires, and setting guidelines for working within the game’s engine.
  • Own key game systems while simultaneously managing a small group of designers.
  • Contribute to defining the design team’s processes and championing the studio’s core values.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of experience as a technical, gameplay, or systems designer.
  • Mastery with Unreal 4/5 Blueprints, along with scripting experience.
  • Strong documentation skills and the ability to convey technical systems for implementation.
  • Prototyping experience and experience with working on a new/original IP.
  • Knowledgeable in C++ would be a bonus.
  • A proven track record of increased responsibility and accomplishment as a designer.
  • A desire to mentor, train, and work as a leader; having already had experience mentoring or training entry-level developers and/or students would be a bonus, but a willingness to learn is required.
  • Self-driven with excellent time management and communication skills.
  • Experience working on at least one multi-platform AA or AAA game.
  • Experience designing for multiplayer games and systems.
  • Experience working in a start-up or early-stage studio environment is a plus.
  • Must already live near Dallas, TX, or be willing to relocate.
