ABOUT THE COALITION

The Building Decarbonization Coalition (BDC) aligns building industry stakeholders with energy providers, environmental organizations, and local governments to help electrify homes and workspaces with clean energy. Through convening, policy analysis, and consumer awareness building, the Coalition is pursuing fast, fair action to accelerate the development of zero-emission homes and buildings that will help states across the nation cut one of its largest sources of climate pollution while creating safe, healthy, and affordable communities.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Managing Director supports the vision for the Coalition and serves as the organization’s internal leader. Reporting to the Executive Director and managing the organization’s Deputy Directors, the Managing Director plays a critical role in the evolution of the Coalition into an organization that can deliver on its long-term vision. As the organization’s #2, the Managing Director is responsible for maintaining the momentum of the Coalition’s work, supporting individual team planning, leading the integration of cross-cutting strategies, and ensuring the building of the structures and systems necessary for and providing strategic leadership in order to ensure fiscal, programmatic and operational strength in alignment with the Coalition’s vision, mission and values.

The Managing Director holds significant functional authority and responsibility across the organization and demonstrates excellence by solving complex technical and adaptive challenges with a collaborative and empathetic leadership style.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Managing Director serves as the #2 position in the organization and is responsible for the following:


Internal Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead the strategic planning process for the organization and ensure that the Coalition's long-term vision and values are integrated across the organization, working closely with the Executive Director.
  • Lead the development of annual work plans and work closely with the Deputy Director of Operations to develop systems/practices for continuous evaluation, reinforcing the continual development, learning and impact of the Coalition.
  • Serve as a senior member of the Executive and Leadership teams to facilitate strategic alignment through transparent decision-making and conflict resolution practices, based on strategic, cultural, operational, and financial rationale.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to Deputy Directors and lead in the development of a positive organizational culture.
  • Support the Board of Directors, nurturing high levels of engagement, communicating effectively and providing timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to fulfill its fiduciary and legal responsibilities.
  • Manage organization-wide Integrated Planning, Budgeting, and Staffing processes working with the States, Operations, Programs and Communications teams to develop clear, actionable, time-bound objectives and measurable metrics.
  • Set the standard for bridge-building across departments to minimize siloes and synergize organizational priorities.

Financial Oversight

  • Ensure the financial health of the Coalition, with the support of the Finance Team.
  • With the Deputy Director of Operations, lead the development and management of the annual budget.
  • Monitor and ensure strong financial controls, supporting the Executive Director’s ability to report regularly on the financial status of the Coalition to the Board of Directors.

Policy and Regulatory Oversight

  • Manage and Support the Deputy Director of States and Regions in their development and implementation of BDC’s campaign strategy in states and oversee the successful execution of the plans to advance BDC’s objectives.
  • Support the Deputy Director of States and Regions in identifying and leading BDC’s engagement in emerging multi-state building decarbonization initiatives.

Programs and Partnerships Oversight

  • Manage and support the Deputy Director of Programs & Partnerships in overseeing the implementation, evaluation, and iteration of the Coalition’s core programs and initiatives, including regular reporting against the adopted goals and objectives.
  • Ensure the Programs and Partnerships team is aligned with the state/regional objectives, while strategically responding to emerging needs in the national building decarbonization movement.

Communications Strategy Oversight

  • Manage and support the Deputy Director of Communications in developing and executing a comprehensive communications strategy, reflecting the Coalition’s unique brand value in alignment with the organization’s vision, mission and values.
  • Oversee and support the Deputy Director of Communications in developing the Coalition’s thought leadership plan and identifying opportunities to enhance the organization’s position in the building electrification landscape among relevant constituents, including current and prospective members, public policymakers, funders and the media.

Staff Management

  • The Managing Director is responsible for supervising the Deputy Directors, working closely with all members of the leadership team, and mentoring them to achieve their best work.
  • Empathize and value diversity in ways of being, communicating, doing, and thinking across the organization.
  • Support organizational priorities on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice & Accessibility.


SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for building decarbonization reflected in a clear and inspiring commitment to the mission and growth of the Coalition.
  • Outstanding leadership and relationship-building skills with clarity of vision and a commitment to the highest levels of integrity, quality and collaboration.
  • 8+ years of executive-level professional team and organizational management experience, preferably with expertise in energy, sustainability and/or climate solutions.
  • Highly collaborative work style with the ability to operate as a peer and thought partner to the Executive Director.
  • Experience with successful public-private partnerships with diverse stakeholders who may possess divergent viewpoints and agendas; multi-sector experience, including public, private and non-governmental, is optimal.
  • Political sophistication with exceptional coalition building skills and the ability to communicate, work effectively and build consensus among a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven skill at building systems and managing operations while maintaining effective, trusting relationships within complex environments.
  • Experience in supervising staff and consultants, team building and motivation, and fostering a culture of collaboration, respect, and transparency to and contributing to the development of a positive organizational culture in a geographically diverse team.
  • Ability to set clear priorities, keen analytic, organizational and problem-solving skills that enable sound decision making.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and equity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Entrepreneurial drive to build an organization from the ground up; start-up experience is optimal.
  • Ability to build and sustain trusting relationships with diverse individuals and groups.



WORK ENVIRONMENT, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $195,000 -$225,000 commensurate with experience, plus a competitive benefits package including paid health insurance coverage, retirement benefits with company matching, unlimited flexible paid leave, 12 paid holidays, access to professional development resources, and much more.
