ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for-profit organization that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 8 branch offices. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, Indiana Civil Legal Aid Fund, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging, and approximately 65 other funding sources.

LOCATION: Indiana (preferably located in an ILS office: Indianapolis, Bloomington, Lafayette, Evansville, Merrillville, Fort Wayne, New Albany, South Bend).

JOB SUMMARY: Indiana Legal Services uses the law to fight poverty and racism, empower clients, and improve access to justice. The LGBT Project is an ILS statewide program that provides civil legal assistance to LGBTQ+ people by targeting legal issues in such areas as identity documents and privacy, employment discrimination, health insurance coverage, students’ rights in schools, and ensuring equal access to the courts. Further, the staff attorney, time permitting, will have an opportunity to work on legal issues in other ILS service areas like family law, landlord/tenant law, consumer law, criminal record expungement, public benefits, and estate planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide high quality legal services for LGBTQ+ individuals across the state of Indiana.
  • Provide high quality legal advice, limited service, and negotiation.
  • Review applications for legal assistance to assess legal issues and needs.
  • Supervise law students, volunteers, and others, as assigned.
  • Plan, implement, and staff regular outreach sessions with community partners.
  • Develop and maintain networking relationships with community partners across the state on issues affecting LGBTQ+ people.
  • Foster collegiality and teamwork within ILS including sharing work product and expertise.
  • Comply with all LSC and grant requirements and all ILS policies and procedures.
  • Perform such other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Dedicated to the mission of Indiana Legal Services.
  • J.D. degree after graduation from an ABA-accredited law school and admitted to practice law in Indiana, or eligible to become licensed by reciprocity or by taking the next bar exam.
  • Experience in LGBT law, especially in areas of LGBT victims of crime, domestic violence, and youth work.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to public interest work and desire to assist low-income individuals.
  • Ability to travel as needed within Indiana.
  • Ability to comply with ILS policies and procedures and competently perform all job duties, with reasonable accommodations.


SALARY AND BENEFITS: Starting salary is $57,425, with a range up to a maximum of $75,535, depending on experience. ILS offers an excellent fringe benefits package including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, Rx), disability insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) plan, and a flex benefit plan.
