What You'll Be Doing

Firefighter Trainees are employees of a Fire Department in the Wake County Fire Tax District. Firefighter Trainees must adhere to strict rules on physical fitness, dress code and appearance while attending the Wake County Firefighter Academy. Upon completion of all Academy requirements, a Firefighter Trainee will become a certified Firefighter and EMT. Once certified, you will perform Firefighter/EMT and other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.

Primary Duties

  • Provide service to the public with empathy, integrity and dedication
  • Complete 38-week Wake County Training Academy
  • Pass Firefighter and EMT certification exams
  • Respond to emergency calls for service to protect public and private property
  • Administer medical care at the EMT-B level
  • Perform Fire Department equipment and station maintenance


During the academy, you will receive an estimated annual salary of $45,302 as a Firefighter Trainee. Upon completion of the Academy, you will receive an estimated annual salary of $49,120.

Required

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Must be 18 years of age by June 25, 2024
  • Must not have any felony convictions
  • A valid driver’s license and a “safe” driving record

Emergency Service Worker Statement

Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
