Department: Fire Reports to: Training Chief
Summary: Performs assigned support duties within all divisions of the Fire Department. The main focus will be to attain an Emergency Medical Technician from the Texas Department of State Health Services and a Basic Fire Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
Essential Functions: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Scope of Responsibility: Performs routine support duties within the various divisions of the Fire Department. Gains exposure to all divisions in order to acquire familiarity with Fire Department operations. A significant portion of time will be spent working toward an EMT Certification and then a State Firefighter Certification.
Once both the EMT Certification and Basic Fire Fighter Certification have been attained, Cadets meeting requirements of Firefighter entry level position will be promoted to Firefighter (Grade F27)

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED certification required.
Knowledge, Skill, Ability Of
License and certification requirements: Possess a valid Texas State Driver's License. Must attain a Texas Class B (Non-CDL) Driver's License within six (6) months of going on shift. If not a DSHS certified EMT and TCFP Firefighter when hired, the employee must enroll in the first available class and make a continuous, uninterrupted effort to pass and become a DSHS certified EMT and TCFP Firefighter. Failure to meet the Odessa Fire Rescue state certifications may result in termination as outlined in Standard Operating Guideline # 700.24.
Skills test: A Written Exam. Physical Agility Test. Background Investigation. Oral Interview. Medical Physical and Drug Screen. (Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of one (1) year probation and continued satisfactory job performance.)
Note: All members of the Odessa Fire Department must become members of the Odessa Firefighters Relief and Retirement Fund. The maximum age for a new member is 35 years.
Salary: $22.69 per hour

- Assist Support Division in mail pick up, pick up and delivering supplies, and running other errands as necessary.
- Assist Administrative Staff as necessary.
- Begin working towards a State of Texas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
- Spend time in Fire Dispatch learning the ins and outs of dispatching.
- Spend time in Inspection assisting the Inspectors with routine inspections and assisting with education programs.
- Assist at the various fire stations with projects deemed necessary.
- Assist the Training Division (FTC/PTC) with training opportunities.
- Familiarization with current FD Standard Operating Guidelines.
- Attend continuing education classes for Fire/EMS.
- Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
