The Environmental Services Department provides opportunities for continuous learning and professional growth. You will be working with a team of scientists and engineers of diverse background, brining expertise and experience from various sectors – government, industry and academia – with a passion to protect the environment. The Water Quality Division strives for first‐class service delivery and continued national recognition by making contributions that have broader impacts and implications beyond the County. The Watershed Management program is an integral part of the Water Quality Division. As the Watershed Management Program Manager, you will have the opportunity to rapidly learn, lead and participate in projects that support the nationally recognized and award-winning Water Quality Division that is striving for international recognition.

The Wake County Environmental Services Department consistently functions at a nationally recognized level. We are comprised of four Divisions consisting of Administration, Animal Services, Solid Waste and Water Quality. Required

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or related field
  • Five years of experience in environmental health, environmental planning, inspections or engineering
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Advanced degree in engineering, environmental science, law, geology, business or related area
  • NCPE – North Carolina Professional Engineer’s (PE) License upon hire or the ability to obtain through comity


How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

  • Ability to work closely with managers, division and department directors and stakeholders to advance the mission of the Environmental Services Department
  • Ability to lead a diverse team of engineers and scientists with technical expertise in plan review, erosion and sedimentation control and post-construction stormwater management
  • Excellent knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services to include customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Excellent ability to identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, to maintain high-quality and competitive core services
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats to explain technical specifications to non-technical groups

Employment Type: Regular

Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 8:30am - 5:15pm

Hiring Range: Salary up to $132,572, depending on qualifications and experience

Market Range: 82,862.00 - 149,143.00

Emergency Service Worker Statement

In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
